Japan's had a steady stream of champions since the '60's, just they've mostly been in lighter weight classes, and they've rarely fought outside of Asia, so we don't see them as much. Also, since they only recognize two belts (WBA and WBC), there generally aren't going to be as many titlists. Still, there are 4 Japanese titlists at the moment (Koki Kameda, Hozumi Hasegawa, Toshiaki Nishioka and Nobuo Nashiro) and all of them have beaten some solid comp. I doubt it gets much more popular than it is though. Boxing is still an alternative sport there, much like the US. Its stars get very famous, but it's probably the 4th or 5th most popular sport in Japan, after baseball, soccer, running and K-1. The bigger guys (physically) are more likely to go into K-1, while the smaller guys tend to go into boxing. Philippines, who knows. Boxing has been popular on and off there for a very very long time. But I suspect with Manny being as huge as he is, in a few years we're going to see a massive influx of Pinoy boxers, and as long as they can continue to produce popular fighters, I see no reason why the sport can't stay very popular there.
hmm says . . . I was right in the previous thread that this fight would be a "super fight" in Japan... poor Daisuke (my old man) lost though... Kameda's are back in the spotlight again... where does daisuke go now?
