Several somewhat notable Thai boxers have changed their last name to "Kokietgym".

Terdsak Jandaeng (fought Marquez, Luevano and Guzman) is now Terdsak Kokietgym.

Sod Looknongyangtoy (twice fought Daniel Ponce De Leon) is now Sod Kokietgym.

There are a bunch of others.

I know Thai fighters often take on stylized ring names and even change their legal names to match (far more often than in other countries, with perhaps only Japan coming close). I also know these names are often colorfully descriptive of the person or what they represent, and often incorporate loan words from other languages (English is always a favorite in Asia).

Is "Kokiet Gym" the name of a place where all these men train together? Is it like a gang affiliation or something? A form of branding?

So, we can assume that Poonsawat is from a rival gymnasium? The "Kratingdaeng Gym"? So we don't actually even know what his real birthname is?

Besides, even if it's a matter of making it more convenient for foreigners - it's their name. Isn't there a matter of pride associated with a fighter's name? You'd think they'd want their accomplishments to be documented under a name that identifies them as a unique person - not just a generic umbrella label for them and all their sparring mates.

"Hey, remember Kronk Gym? He was an awesome middleweight".

"Yeah. Wait, which one? You mean Tommy Kronk Gym, Gerald Kronk Gym...?"

 

A shorthand denomination in thousands of batteries, yes.
