It was only Cotto. And that was done because manny was thought of as a small light welter at the time. He's not done it since. If anyone wants to fight him at 147 for his belt, he'll fight at 147. Marquez requested one with manny in his 2nd fight at welter and manny obliged.

Cotto requesting one for Margo despite been in the middle of his 154 term is the most baffling. (especially if he can't even make 150)

 

in answer to the actual title, its irritating suggesting cotto was scared, and embarrasing to suggest that when they are asking for a catchweight. Stuff like that is amunation for the haters.

If they'd offer cotto at 154 and he turned it down, then you could argue he's scared, but not when you offered the fight at 150.

 

So why did he fight del la hoya at 147?

Dela Hoya is naturally bigger than cotto, yet pac whooped oscar ass at 147, so why would he need to catchweight cotto?

I think they assumed they could beat him. They didn't know he'd be as bad as he was. But Roach had trained oscar, and he new what he had with manny and was confident.

You forget, that Oscar offered Manny the fight at 147.

Mannys side probably did question wether to take the fight. There was a protest in his country, and ESB though Manny was nuts for taking it.

But Manny wasn't a star then, it was more money than he'd ever made in his career and a chance to become a superstar, so he took the risk.

You forget that oscar was supposed to be the one cherry picking manny.

When it was Manny vs Cotto, Manny was now a star, so was able to dictate terms. Against Oscar, he just did what he was told.

 

Manny accepting oscar at 147 was considered crazy. But people will do that to get in the ring with a Cash cow and make crazy money.

Marquez did it with floyd. It was suicidal but big money.
Martine will give in to any demand to fight floyd or Manny now, and a lot of fighters will do the same to get a chance to earn more money.

Back in 07 Oscar was still a massive star, so manny just took a leap with that one and it paid off.

 

Trout + Canelo = more money than just Pac with no weight draining.

Cotto bent to Pac's demands once, no need to do it again.

Pac is a lot smaller than Cotto.

 

I don't think Cotto is scared......but I do believe he didn't want to fight Pac right away after his great performance against Floyd. Losing to Pac again.....right after raising his stock wouldn't have been the best way to capitalize on this wave. Cotto is looking to grab another title....set up a bigger fight where he has a belt to leverage a sweeter deal against Floyd or Pac. Pac doesn't want to fight at 154 but I know Cotto doesn't want to fight at WW.....so most likely they'll meet at a catch weight if they are to meet again.

 

It's a compromise you wanna make a mega fight but one guy is smaller and one guy is bigger so the compromise is to fight at a catchweight so that the fight is a fair fight.

 

Just because you move up it doesn't mean you have to come in at the full
weight yourself.
