Like I’ve said in other threads: 1. Hydration requirements immediately prior to weighing in. 2. Automated pupil testing between rounds after a scare. The argument for same day weigh-ins is stupid and ignores the reason why day before exist in the first place. Arguments for headgear and bigger gloves are also stupid since neither prevents TBI, which is often most serious in accumulation matches (like Maxim’s bout) versus getting stopped from one or two big shots.
...brain cancer from having an absurd number of cat scans in a career. Headgear and big gloves don’t fix anything.
IMO... Theres not a whole lot to change. Boxing is intrinsically dangerous, and it just is what it is. However... one thing that could be done, is make the gloves smaller. Most of the time tragedies happen, its from a guy getting a prolonged beating. Make the gloves smaller and harder... to where guys who get hit a lot are getting stopped on cuts or tko'd earlier in fights, and not taking the prolonged beatings that lead to tragedies. Seems counter intuitive, but imo that would help a bit.
I’ll have to find it. It was on NFL radio in the last couple years. The study excluded punters, kickers, and backups that played below a certain number of snaps per season. The numbers were startling man. Anywhere from an average age of 52 to 59 depending on position. I’ll see if I can find it when I have some time. I believe it was by a Harvard Dr.
I disagree that boxers are getting bigger and stronger. Anyhow, same day weigh in is not the answer, and could even see an increase I dehydrated boxers getting damaged. For me, I think boxing needs to copy ONE Fc. Fighters fight at a walking around weight and have to be within a certain percentage of it at all times. Boxing will never be 100% safe, and I don't want it to be. Safety is overrated
Maybe if you go down by 7rnds on the cards the fight should be stopped?..The guy that fought Ugas on the weekend was lucky to get out in one piece. Unnecessary punishment.
There is an article by a company called Health Force Partners that helps retired NFL players try to stay healthy. It seems like they designed this place because of all the alarming numbers in the study I mentioned earlier. Below is a quote from the article: Alonzo Mitz was one of 35 former pro football players from the region coaxed to this Bellevue medical clinic for a series of heart screening tests conducted by Denver cardiologist Jeffrey Boone and funded by an alliance of NFL organizations -- taking part in an innovative program considered overdue for a violent sport characterized by startling low life-expectancy rates, depending on playing position, of 53 to 59. I'm almost positive it was WR that lived the longest at an average age of 59. Then it just went down from there to OL and DL who only averaged to make it to 53.
Do pro gloves really diminish power all that much though? I mean with amateurs the size of them does affect your power for sure but pros tend to use what, 8oz gloves?
Many of the recent tragedies happened with 10oz gloves. And yes imo 2 to 4oz, between the little extra power, but also the superficial damage caused (tkos on cuts) would make a difference, imo. Many fighters who get brain bleeds get them late in fights after taking prolonged beatings. Had they been stopped on cuts or getting ko'd from smaller and harder gloves 3 rounds earlier, imo there would be less tragedies. Obviously its just conjecture, but imo I dont see how it wouldnt help in many cases. Making gloves bigger and softer just means boxers can absorb more damage over the course of the fight, which imo leads to these type of brain injuries more often.
I really can't believe some guys thinking same day weigh-ins are better for the athletes? WTF??? It's even more dangeorus with same day weigh-ins because they have less time to dehydrate after the cut. It's insane.
