You're right, it's an effective position. The announcers also mentioned he does it often. I am just a little surprised that given his experience and considering who he was fighting he would look a little more comfortable. I think in the end he certainly got the best of Kongo on the ground, but like I said it just surprised me that he didn't do more or wasn't able to do more against him.
Unfortunately, it was a boring fight and both fighters looked terrible. I was surprised that Kongo decided to try the ground as much as he did and in fact, was also surprised he did so well on the ground judging from previous fights. It still needs work but it's obvious he's made improvements. Herring's inability to do more from the ground surprised me as well, given his experience. I think Kongo was surprised by Herring rushing him and had a tough time connecting on his feet because of it. I really couldn't pick a winner and think they (unfortunately) need a rematch to settle it.
Personally I thought it was a horrible fight. It was about as weak a display of grappling you can see in the UFC. What the **** was Kongo doing at the end of the third when he reached out for Herring's foot and got reversed? I would rather die than watch that fight again. HW's suck ass outside of the top 4 or 5.
