Matt Korobov vs Jose Uzcategui on the undercard of Crawford v Gamboa Saturday night. Who ya got? The WBO's latest rankings @160 have Korobov #1 and The Ooze Cat #4. The winner should(in theory) be in line for a shot at Peter Quillin's WBO belt. Here's some footage of Uzcategui: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UkmvWCS1vrw I'm gonna go out on a limb and say somebody's getting knocked out Saturday
This is a very great fight. Maybe a FOTY Contender, based on their style. Korobov should win, but Uzcategui is no joke. It would be just a little upset, if the wins.
It's always hard to tell with these guys with big KO records exclusively gained in one country (even if it is Mexico) - too often they fail when they step up - that said, his last win, Lopez, is creditable - sorta at least - at least Lopez has been in with some decent fighters - even if he's generally lost. Clearly the guy can bang - but it's almost impossible to tell how good he is given his level of opposition. OTOH Mattvey Korobov - despite clearly having great skills and rarely losing rounds has a career consisting almost entirely of 'stay busy' fights - and yet hasn't even stayed particularly busy. I suspect that if Mattvey doesn't try to take too many risks and just boxes Uzcategui he oughtta win a wide UD - but as shown in the Edwards fight he can look vulnerable if he tries to open up too much - something we've seen more of recently as he's perhaps realised the need for a more crowd pleasing style to raise his profile. IMO Mattvey should play it fairly cautiously early - only opening up if he's sure he has the measure of this kid. The problem for Mattvey is that a victory will do little to raise his profile - TBH I hadn't heard of Uzcategui (aside from noticing his name on Boxrec) until this fight was announced. The only real place Korobov winning will make much difference will be on Boxrec IMO - where he should finally break the top 10. Korobov at least has some name recognition - even if just as a skilled prospect who has stagnated, and a win by Jose would raise his stock - showing that he can carry his power even against a gifted technical fighter.
I woulda said it's doubtful since Quillin's a Haymon guy but since Loma vs GRJ got made via purse bid under similar circumstances (also a WBO sanction and a TR vs a Haymon fighter involving the top contender) there's a recent precedent, so why not?
Quillin has been WBO champ for 20 months and never faced a mandatory if the winner is designated as one he won't have a choice thankfully.
I thought BJ Saunders was in line to be mandatory if he won his next fight, but Korobov would be more deserving. I was impressed with his fight against Derek Edwards, just too bad it wasn't on tv and only the internet. We got to see a lot of questions answered about Korobov. He showed good skill & power against a good fighter, showed he could handle himself if he gets hurt badly, and he showed he could perform well in later rounds (first time past 8 ). I like him to punish Uzcategui if he gets aggressive and starts throwing wide, and if he gets a shot against Quillin I like him in that as well.
I am liking the styles match-up, I am picking Korobov, I think he's just a better boxer. An "upset" wouldn't surprise me one bit though, Uzcategui looks like a very quality fighter as well.
Good matchup between rising prospects...... Utzegai gonna have the edge inside and he'll look to pressure and get to the body... Korobov should work behind the jab and look to counter.....he's got better skills and possibly better overall punching power. I PRAY THE WBO ACTUALLY ENFORCES THIS MANDATE making Quillin fight a live body not coming of a loss.
They're both good inside but i would definitely give the edge to Korobov faster hands with shorter tighter punches. Both good body punchers too but Korobov goes there more often and with Uzcategui being at least three inches taller with probably even more of a reach advantage its more important for Korobov to target the body. Uzcategui wants to use the height and reach advantage.
That's the common logic going into this one.....taller guy fights outside shorter guy targets the inside......however I believe Korobov being the more skillful fighter and throws straighter shots should really look to exploit Utz shortcomings on D.....pepper him outsid then counter him or punish him if he comes in w/o throwing
I wasn't saying Korobov won't have success from the outside i just think he may have a bigger edge inside. Uzcategui throws nice long straight punches from outside Korobov tends to throw hooks more often especially with his combos but his counter punching and handspeed when outside should cause Uzi problems.
We were BOTH right. Korobov dominated with his body punching and with his straight L up the middle. Beautiful work inside and out.:good
