I'd like to see Korobov go after that WBO before fighting GGG. He's got a good chance of bringing that belt back to HBO for a unification. Anybody think TR gets out bid by $2500 dollars again?
havent seen the fight - im hearing it was a poor and disappointing performance by both men. Is this true?
thanks for the replies...ive never seen Korobov at all - the impression I get is that he is a bit of a "hype job". I have seen Uzi previously but from what I did see of Uzi I was not particularly impressed, so Im not surprised if their fight was poor......
first time for me to see korobov. i think he would have been more impressive had he not gassed early. he was mouthbreathing from 4th round on.
Korobov is like a MW version of Rigondeux, not quit so much in styles but mentality & approach. He was clearly levels above Uzecategui and either didn't know how to push it or simply refused to. I watched it off Boxnation, but I guess HBO was cheerleading him for the sake of building a Golovkin opponent. The Derek Edwards fight was a much more entertaining affair than this one, maybe Uzecategui is that awkward to fight? If we get Quillin-Korobov next (assuming Korobov's cut heals in time for the fall), I'll be leaning towards Quillin for the UD. I think both guys box safe/tentative and Quillin simply outworks Korobov.
He sort of was hyped when he first turned pro, but a combination of his more cautious, technical style and injury or management problems and possibly Arums failure to push him have virtually sidelined him. Technically he is highly skilled but he simply seems to lack the finishing instinct and possibly has stamina issues - or at least for some reason just seems to take rounds off. He did let his hands go more in the Edwards fight (though it nearly got him KOed - which may be why he was more cautious in what was a possible gateway fight for him last night) and also scored a lovely stoppage against Ossie Duran last year - worth tubing if you have the time. I still see him as one of the most skilled boxers at 160, but he's gonna have to iron out the above issues if he's gonna to have much sucess at the top of the division.
well you certainly made interestibg observation. i have noticed korobov gassing surprising early in his previous bouts as well. i am not sure id matt has some sort of stamina issues...
It was actually a more entertaining fight than ppl say..... Korobov scored 2 official KDs, and 2 that were clearly KDs that the ref called slips/pushes.....one in the 8th to the body, near the end of the rd, that Utz took a knee on while Korobov spun out of a clinch. The other was a combo that caught Utz and when he tried to clinch, Korobov pushed off, and Utz went straight down. So for me, scoring 4 KDs vs a guy who claims to have never been dropped as a pro or an AM......and winning a wide decision.....Korobov also took some heavy leather from the the 4th on.....Utz was rangefinding for 3 rds and trying to spoil......but around the 4th, he began to drill Korobov with 1-2-3s, very cleanly with laser guided precision. In other words, Korobov showed a great chin, as those punches had KOd 22 of Utzs 25 previous opponents.thumbsup:thumbsup
Korobov kind of reminds of of a 160lb version of a Dirrell. Not in style, but in an abstract sense. Technically skilled, confident, but mentally stuck in amateurs and lacking that certain something that segregates Champions and Stars from skilled contenders.
