Ratings done mid 1989 - 1. Michael Spinks 2. Dwight Muhammad Qawi 3. Matthew Saad Muhammad 4. Eddie Mustafa Muhammad 5. Marvin Johnson 6. Eddie Davis 7. Virgil Hill 8. Bobby Czyz 9. Thomas Hearns 10. Dennis Andries 11. Don Lalonde 12. Leslie Stewart
Obviously, Prince Charles Williams should be in the top 12 I would put Williams above Stewart. Stewart caught Johnson at the perfect time when he was getting shot. Conversely, Williams stopped a still Prime and dangerous Czyz. Then, he kod him again in a rematch. Stewart or Andries could be dropped from the top 12 to accommodate Williams.
Agreed. The victory over Johnson (which honestly was kind of messy and showed Stewart needed serious work on his finishing skills) was the only real significant win on Stewart's resume. Williams is a much better choice.
The Prince has to be higher than Czyz. He beat him twice. Also better than Andries, Lalonde and Stewart. And Tommy Hearns only had one fight at the weight, beating the pre-Kronk Andries who was strong but even more limited at that point. So I rank Williams over him too. 8th for me but I'd need to look at some of the guys who haven't made the list from the early part of the decade. There must be another contender from the golden age who could beat some of the lower end of this list.
Still, a great list by not over rating Virgil Hill, a fighter that never would have been champ in the Foster to Spinks years. Mustafa was better than Saad at his best but on accomplishment you have to give it to Saad.
