Lol i am not convinced myself. I think we have all agreed on his inconsistency. It is the lack of cleaning out the division combined with loses to the others on this list that make placing him there....well something I don’t feel comfortable with. Like JT said if this was H2H Whitaker JCC Arguello & Camacho would vie for the prize. But can you rate guys who spent 11 monthths to 2 years at the pinnacle higher than Rosario who was 1 for 2 years and top 6 for another 5, with some solid wins as well. To me this might be the toughest division of the decade so far that JT has posted. So many guys stepping up and out of this division leaves us without a dominant clear choice. Rosario provably gets it for me by default.
Yeah, your previous post made me doubt my own previous statement about Whitaker! I guess his best was split between 2 decades but he established himself as the no. 1 lightweight in the world in the 90s.
I feel Rosario`s biggest test was Chavez and Chavez won it but a lot of people feel he beat Camacho, but thanks for expaining, I would have loved to have seen a bout with Pae v Rosario also too.
When i go back and look he actually spent a lot less time at 135 than i thought tbh and got a bit less done there. From memory he was considered the top 135 from when he rematched Ramirez at the very latest and perhaps even from the initial robbery. His performances and standard were of a very very high level. From there it was one title stop at 140 then loads of 147 with another title stop at 154. He actually has four really solid years at 147 which of coure adds dramatically to his ATG ranking. So he established himself as thew top 135 dog in the 80's for sure and carried it until he moved up. Given the split and short time spent there in either decade it makes it hard for him to gain traction at the top on either list tho. Admittedly the 90's looks more scattered than the 80's even were.
As for his ATG lightweight ranking, I have him top 10 but lower half. He seems to have crept up the rankings over the years but imo he doesn't quite have the standout wins or longevity in his championship reign to make the top 5 when compared with Gans, Leonard, Willams, Ortiz or Duran. I have him around no. 6 or 7 - still unquestionably a great of the division though.
I totally agree actually. I haven't researched some others but my gut feeling is that i'd have Nell in the lower half. H2H he's top 5 i'd reckon.
