I thought Judah would win but I wasn’t totally shocked. I thought it was a tough fight for both guys, but I thought Judah’s speed would prevail. 2001 was the Year of the Upset in big fights. Two unification bouts took place that year, at 160 and 140. Hopkins and Tszyu were roughly 3 to 1 underdogs to their younger, undefeated opponents. Barrera was also around a 3 to 1 underdog against Hamed. Rahman was around a 20 to 1 underdog to Lennox in Africa.
I picked Tszyu but I wasn’t sure of it. I’m a huge Tszyu fan but Zab’s speed and youth had me concerned. The outcome shocked and delighted me.
On paper it was a competitive matchup. Zab was undefeated and had great speed. His attitude was atrocious but nobody had yet to make him pay. Tzyu exposed the fact that while he was very gifted Zab didn't have much defense other than relying on reflexes. This is Tzyus best win in my opinion because though Zab wasn't the most accomplished scalp on his resume he wasn't past prime or previously exposed.
