A really good fight is getting finalized: on February 7, 2009, excellent technician and LWW champion Andreas Kotelnik will face huge puncher Marcos Rene Maidana, an unbeaten Argentinian with a 96% KO ratio.

Kotelnik of course became the WBA 140 pound champion in March after he knocked out unbeaten Gavin Rees in his hometown. The other fight he had in the U.K. was a very close fight - in fact I scored it a draw - vs. local hero Junior Witter, and a clear controversial draw and loss to Soulemaye M'Baye before his French home crowd. Kotelnik is technically very sound and a boxer first, but despite scoring only 13 KOs in 33 fights, he does have a decent punch if he puts body weight behind it.

Maidana started his Germany-based career a year-and-a-half ago, and now has a 15-fight KO win steak. He stopped Miguel Callist, Arturo Morua and Manuel Garnica, of course neither are elite fighters, but pretty decent competition. 22 of his 25 fights ended inside 3 rounds BTW.

This is a classic boxer vs. puncher match-up, a bit (or very much) under the radar, but I think it will offer some exciting moments and we'll see if Maidana can bring the heat to the elite level as well...

Tim Bradley's pretty popular win over Witter overshadows the fact that now Kotelnik is the clear no#2 in the division, only behind Ricky Hatton.

Very interesting fight indeed! Maidana can hit like a mule.At times he looks like King Kong looking for easy prey inside a box ring. Kotelnik's chin will be tested against that big banger from the southern part of the american continent. Th ats for sure!

However,Kotelnik is a very capable operator. After one or two rounds we will see which way the cat jumps. My guess:Kotelnik will outbox his slower opponent most of the rounds, but will taste the ring dust, too.
    Kotelnik by point decision.

Winner should fight Hatton in the UK (I would rather see one of them than DLH or Pac)

Maidana has been flying under the radar for quite a long time. Dont really get it as he is an exciting banger who has won almost all his fights by way of knockout. As far as I know only one opponent has been able to go the full route with him.
He somehow reminds me a little bit of Kostya Tszyu. Maidana strides throough the ring like a bad copy of King Kong.

I'm really looking forward to this. I've heard a little about Maidana but haven't seen him yet...I can't understand why he's not a bigger name than he is yet given the buzz from those who've seen him.

Is this a main event, or is it on the under card of something? and where is it held?

    Undercard, chief support at best.
Neither one of them is popular in Germany where the fight will be held.

Neither Maidana nor Kotelnik are truly that marketable fighters.

Maidana looks like a tatooed prison bird who thinks that he is King Kong, and Kotelnik looks like a clerk from the local McDonalds. Both of them lack the kind of charisma to draw big crowds to their outing to a ring.

Anyway! A classic match up! Puncher vs boxer!
    I look forward to it!
