I just watched a classic fight with a guy from liverpool called shea neary you all must know him but he was in a great fight with mickey ward. Can anyone give me info on what happen to him after this i heard he had a bad descision against eamonn magee but was wondering if anyone knew anything recent. He seemed like one tough nut in the ward fight. Any info thanks in advance :good

I think he's a trainer because he was in somebody's corner in a undercard fight the other week.

He owns a gym in Liverpool now and has a number of decent fighters. Tony Dodson boxes out of Neary's gym as does my cousin Mick Stanton (he was in Stanton's corner on the undercard to the Lynes fight). He also recently had a charity fight against a local Liverpool journalist which he won on points - only an exhibition nothing to be read into.

His fight against Andy Holligan was a good one too. Very exciting boxer

Yes very good Neary, fond memories of him breaking through to international class. He was pretty good. Thought he beat Magee quite handily. It would have being gr8 had he of got the verdict, a fight with a young Hatton would have been massive. He was just outside of World class but very nearly scored a pretty sensational win over Ward.

As already said he was robbed against Magee and the fight against Ward is one of my favourite fights.

People forget, the Ward fight was one Neary was supposed to win. Its one of those loses that doesn't look too bad in hindsight but was an upset at the time.

Good shout Gaz, but Neary was favourite by our bookies. Neary was 22-0 going in and I think Ward was 34-9 which obviously makes for an easy decision on how to place the odds for a domestic bookie. Truth is though, that same version of Ward went 12 rounds with Judah and beat a good Reggie Green who was just off a defeat to Shamba Mitchell (SD I think!!!). So Ward was underrated by the UK going in. I dont think the Ward fight took that much out of Neary in terms of desire though, it was the Magee decision that sucker punched him the way I see it.

yeah neary was well unlucky against magee.

just did more that night and deserved the decision.

hatton-neary is one of those 'shame it never happened' domestic fights.

hatton would have won and won well.

but neary would have made him earn it. :bbb

Agree with this. I loved Neary long before I loved Hatton, but Ricky would have been too much for him by the time the fight would have come about

I remember his fights in ITV, yeah deffo a thrill a minute fighter. Its a shame he was taken down the WBU route, instead of the British/Commonwealth/European route as his record in history would look more credible then, he was at least European class.

thanks for the feedback guys :good

  14. I thought Ward just about outclassed him, was sad to hear that Jimmy (Neary) only earned around 270k from his whole career, and after buying his house had to start work on the railways.

Great to see him using his knowledge to bring on new talent.

Quarter of a million isn't a bad return for that type of career, he was never a world beater. He did used to put bums on seats in Liverpool, but never really got any further.
