he was on the verge of being a star Neary IMO before the Ward defeat. His fights were shown on ITV - the Tyson one was anyway. No nonsense tough nut. Always said once he got beat he'd get a proper job which is what he did. Good to hear he has a gym. I think his son boxes doesn't he?
That true? That's a pity. I did hear he was working in a car factory after retiring but thought it was bollocks. I thought (and hoped) he would have earnede enough to make him comfortable off all those ITV fights. Hopefully he can do something as a trainer in any case. I will always remember his fight with (I think) Terry Southerland, a decent American clubfighter who had a win over Ray Oliveira - boxing's equivalent of "They think it's all over". Neary had been cut badly in the first round and his opponent was targetting the wound. The ITV commentator (can't remember who it was) said "wouldn't it be a shame if this fight had to be stopped because of a cut" (it was shaping up to be a lively bout). Two seconds later as Neary pole axes his man with a crunching straight right "Well... it'll be stopped now!" It was as well. Never quite world class but they were some fun times with Neary around.
