Kovalev was boxing his ears off... Ward got frustrated and did something desperate to change the fight. Ward mistakenly thought that he could outbox Kovalev.

5-2 leading up to Round 8.

Face it, the guy lost. It was evident in the 7th round when he tried to milk that shot he got caught with on the belt line. He had poor stamina for this fight as well, and it was evident by that point.

And Kovalev was clearly hurt from a right hand upstairs about 30 seconds before that body punch sequence in the 8th round. He just lost to not only a superior fighter, but a much more determined one.

I don't agree with the stoppage, but Kovalev was about to get stopped soon enough. Live to fight another day.

The hell are you talking about? Kovalev was outboxing him. That flustered Ward and he decided to go for gold and dirty it up. The damn referee is saying that he missed calls. What does that tell you?

Kovalev's jab was exceptional early in the fight. And I agree he was outboxing Ward.

I thought Kovalev's stamina looked pretty good heading into the final few rounds.

He got caught with body shots about halfway through Round 8. I do think Ward felt some pressure to turn on the gas, and it worked for him (although things were marred with the low blows).

Ward intentionally consistently threw low blows. he knew he couldn't win clean. Ward is a fighter that would want to win any way possible legal or illegal, he's a very dirty fighter.

This is bizzaro world, no offense you guys can carry on but you have to admit the rational being used here is getting more and more inventive everyday. If you can't see how effective Ward was even when being outlanded then I don't think this is meant for you. I scored rounds for Kovalev where I thought Sergey won on the books but Ward made the best impact and landed the sharper more impactful punches. He laid a fine foundation for a win that's being watered down because of a bullish:t stoppage.

Or maybe, just maybe, Ward knew that if he invested in the body early and often, and bent the rules a bit by straying low at times (a B-Hop-esque tactic), Kovalev would become increasingly tired, angry, and frustrated. Kovalev had definite stretches where he was outjabbing and outboxing Ward from distance, but Ward absolutely performed better from the outside in the rematch than he did in the first fight. Ward looked more spy and quick on his feet - probably due to getting his knee issue cleared up as Virgil Hunter alluded to before the fight.

I was rooting for Sergey, but Ward mentally ****ed him up before and during the fight. Sergey played right into the mind games.

People go on about that right hand but he was softened up for that punch with low blows, Ward is dirtier than an old prostitute.

I liked this post because it's true that Ward was fighting on the whole a very smart game and picking his punches very well. He's got a great sense of timing and will often catch an opponent "between actions" and break their rythmn. Despite Kovalev winning fairly wide leading into the 8th, I get the feeling that Kovalev was fighting at 100% to outwork Ward whereas Ward was banking his energy for the later rounds. The last 4 would have been humdingers. Such a BS stoppage and I think that the referee ruined that fight.

So the only effective body work was illegal? The legal shots accomplished nothing? Sergey looked in control the last two rounds?

Todd be serious for once I know you have it in you, I'm not asking you to credit Ward but was Sergey less impressive than you expected.
