If you get a lenient 70's ref Lopez takes out Kovalev after likely absorbing a beating. Kovalev would gas, bend and then break long before far before the near infinite heart of Lopez would give out. His face would likely be a terrible mess, but that doesn't win fights.
Well, us old guys are kinda set in our ways. But, the late 70s early 80s really was a special time in the LHW division.
This is a classic case of distance creating perspective. Again, if you were judging Saad's chances against a Moore or Harold Johnson or even Lesnevich as of 1983, old timers of that day would probably laugh in your face. In time, Kova's legacy and worth will find their proper place.
If Kovalev gets in a brawl with Matthew Saad Muhammed his parachute won't open around the 10th and he hits the floor harder than John Tate.
I'm not really sure how hard he hits, I think of him as a heavy handed puncher, not a Spinks jinx kind of light heavy power and certainly not in the Bob Foster range. Saad would take it.
Prime Muhammad was very, very fortunate to make it out of the fourth round against Richie Kates. But the consensus here is that prime Kovalev has no realistic chance of accomplishing anything against Muhammad other than getting brutally knocked out. Ok.
russell give it a rest, he beat ward in the 1st and that was a great fight with two really good h2h fighters. just like fury says he will be back stronger and better without two tough fights that would of been hard mentally and being in prime age, its only in the ring you can prove it, not just by uttering it.....people say stuff even though havent proven it yet, its a believe a champion needs kovalev believed he was in good physical condition and ready to come back strongly, many greats have said and believed it and failed, kovalev was a good champion, a very entertaining fighter, doesnt mean he couldnt of declined physically without him knowing it, it happens, id take the fighter from ward 1 and the pascal fights to beat alvarez!
