Whatever your personal take on Kovalev - misanthrope or old school badass - he's pretty much earned the respect of boxing fans by doing it the hard way. If HBO had given him half the backing they did to GGG from the start he'd be one of the biggest stars in the sport IMO - talk about an easy sell, ffs, guy makes Ivan Drago look like a *****cat.

I hope he gets a huge payday soon. He deserves it.

Kovalev takes care of business, without being baby fed like Golovkin is. Kovalev has a better resume than Golovkin does, in less fights. If what is being said in this thread is true about Kovalev's pay, then he is getting seriously ripped off.

That ain't sad. It's economics. You want to pay every club fighter and amateur millions of dollars to half fill a high school gymnasium go run your own fighters charity. Remember the beginning of Rocky I?

"Spider, here's your share. $40.00, less $15 locker and corner man, $5 shower and towel, 7% tax. Comes to $17.20. You fought a good fight, Spider. Balboa, you get winner's share. $65 less $15 locker and corner end, $5 shower and towel and 7% tax, comes to $40.55

    When do I fight again?

Maybe two weeks. Give me a call."

Guys like Kovalev either have second jobs to support their hobby or they get a small salary from their promoter to live on. In the latter case, the promoter is losing money the first year or two until a prospect has gained enough of a reputation to fight for big purses on a national stage. It's a risky investment, since most prospects go nowhere and are a bust. If they don't get sparked repeatedly once they step up, they might get injured, hooked on drugs, or retire before a promoter ever sees dime one.

If he wasn't such a dip**** he would do what anyone with a brain would do. Tell his promoter to let the Stevenson fight go to a purse BID (which means the guy paying the most money gets the fight). Then WHEN Haymon puts up the winning bid go over to him where he can get paid what' he's worth...

Instead he's a "good boy" for Kathy Duva.

It's not true, bunch of Flomo/Haymon fanboys resentful of Duva.

It's funny the title of the thread is about how many times Kovalev fought for free. Guess the reason he's not fighting for free any more?

Yes, Kathy Duva and Main Events.

Agreed. Also CW mairis briedis went to kovalevs training camp and duva signed him. he waited for nearly year and had no fights scheduled so briedis jumped at chance to fight chara in ahmat show.

Guess what he had to pay 50% to main events of his pure altought they did nothing to stage the fight no sparing trainers nothing. then he had to pay money to his real trainer sparing partners and as he put it what was left was worth one nice evening at resturant!

Here's an article where he discusses the Hopkins fight. His purse was $500,000. He took home $125,000.

He said he was "told" he had to pay 50% in "taxes" and then he had to pay his team. He was left with $125,000.

    These are Kovalev's own words.

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/bo...st-quarter-purse-Bernard-Hopkins-victory.html

First of all, he should pay his team their fees first. Those fees are their taxable income.

His take home pay WAS NOT $500,000 for that fight. His take home pay was what was left after those "deductions" from his pay.

If he paid taxes on the entire $500,000 first, he's paying his taxes and THEIR TAXES.

Also, if they took 30% of his money, he'd still be left with $350,000. And he doesn't have to pay 50% taxes on $350,000. More like 28%. At the most.

But EVEN IF THEY WEREN'T LYING TO HIM (and they are) and he paid 50% taxes on $350,000, he'd be left with $175,000 ... not $125,000.

Fighters don't earn 25% of their purses. Ali took home more than 25% of his purses, and he gave HALF HIS PURSE off the top to the Nation of Islam.

Kovalev is getting robbed blind by Duva.

    ROBBED.

Like I said, King paid Tim Witherspoon $90,000 when he was supposed to $500,000 for the Bruno fight. Duva paid Kovalev $125,000 when he was supposed to get $500,000.

But King was the "worst of the worst" and Kathy Duva skates by ...

Negotiating peanuts for one of the best fighters in boxing and only giving him 25% of those peanuts.

    She's awful..
