Fought in straight lines the entire night and didn't circle to either side at all to create angles to throw other punches besides the straight right. Kov needed to throw left hooks to the body and head and simply didn't do it. I don't know if a new trainer would help but Kov is lucky that Ward didn't open up his offense more because that could've been bad for Kovalev. I actually don't have an issue with Ward winning because I thought Kov was getting outboxed for much of the 2nd half of the fight and Kov has only himself to blame because he wasn't cutting off the ring and he simply wasn't doing enough.
Kov. was too pre-occupied with trying to land the straight right and Ward was ready for that all night which is why they tied up so much because Kov. was missing with it and than Dre would tie him up. Kov's gameplan was all wrong for this fight.
Yeas I would Agee with that entirely, after the knock down which was a lovely counter he should have pressured more and like you say gone to the body more, that said Wards defence is so good
For some people Kovalev would have had to knock Ward out to get any recognition. It's not enough that he wins a close fight.
I also thought it would've helped if he had been looking more for those midrange bodyshots he started landing in the 12th.
Yet the same commentators that scored a clear win fir sergei hailed wards brilliance for the win. Joke
When Ward finally figured him out around the 5th round he had him. He would beat Kovalev to the punch and then tie him up when Kov wanted to counter strike. Hopkins and Wlad Klits should be applauding Ward for mastering the craft. Kovalev gassed out by the 6th. He was done.
Good observation. The second half of the fight Kovalev wasn't boxing his fight, behind the jab, combos and aggression. He often squared up and gave Ward a target he didn't have to give him. I think he has the tools to refine his gameplan for a rematch, but Ward overall mentally edged Kovalev tonight.
Well in fairness Kovalev has been fighting at LHW for years so yeah many people will say if you can't KO a guy who just came to LHW no matter how good he is how good are you really? I totally understand that point of view.
I agree. Straight lines and chased too much. Right hand was too low where Ward clocked him with the jab repeatedly. They have their work cut out in front of them for a rematch. I don't know if his trainer can pull it off, I've not been impressed with his work and advice to other fighters such as Jennings.
I watched the condensed video and it looked to me Kov was holding back on the straight right. Maybe he reinjured it. If so, the rematch could be very interesting.
