There's a lot to gain for Kovalev. He's only getting $500k for thus fight and, old or not, knocking out Hopkins would do a lot for his profile and earnings power. How fans on a message board "credit" him for it is irrelevant; the fight has huge positive implications for Kovalev if he wins, and negative ones if he loses.

Just because Hopkins has less to lose doesn't mean Kovalev doesn't have a hell of a lot to gain.

Kovalev has more to lose than gain. Especially if Hopkins ruins his career, which tends to happen to so many Bernard opponents (ie - Tito, Tarver, Pavlik, Taylor, Winky - none of those guys were the same when Hopkins was finished with them).

The guy fought for free for his first 18 fights. Beating Hopkins would make him a seven figure per fight fighter and the premier LHW on the planet.

I'd say Kovalev has plenty to gain. Who cares if people make excuses for Hopkins on account of his age?

He definitely has plenty to gain. And you make a solid point on the financial uprising he's had. But I still think he has more to lose. My point, perhaps ill-stated, is that if he loses - the potential for those 7 figure paydays could dissipate because, historically speaking, Hopkins has derailed quite a few careers (and I'm sure quite a few career projected earnings, too).

Perhaps this is a round about way of saying it's a risky fight for both men, because each of them could have chosen easier routes and easily steered clear of each other.

Hopkins could potentially be ruining a chance to defend into his 50s against the Murats and Shumenovs of the world, and Kovalev could be missing out on future earnings.

I'm just glad that they decide to fight. May the best win on that night.

He has a lot to lose, it's true. And some people won't give him much credit if he wins, they'll just say B-Hop was old.

But he has a lot to gain: if he wins he'll unify THREE light heavyweight belts, and that will surely get him big fights and bigger paydays in the future.

:huh Ever wonder why some fighters today, not just Hopkins, compete in high level fights at relatively advanced ages whereas the old timers could not successfully do that against the top fighters of their eras? Even prime via artifice eventually fades.

Not quite sure of your angle here - MVC! - are you aware that your comments could be construed as praise for Kovalev for being willing to take such a big risk?

Nah. I give huge props to both guys, certainly BHops deserves and has got a huge amount of praise for making this dangerous fight when he didn't have to, but in this era of 'risk and reward' and milking belts, Kovalev should also be getting praise for stepping up to the plate.

If Kovalev loses, he'll just be another one of Hopkins's victims, like Pavlik and Eastman.

I've never been a big fan of Hopkins, but I have also learned not to bet against him. By all reason he shouldn't win this fight, for god's sake he is almost 50 years old, but it wouldn't shock me to death if he were to find a way to neutralize and outbox Kovalev. Still, if you put a gun to my head to make a pick I would have to go with Kovalev. Still, props to Hopkins for even taking this fight, not like it is life-changing money for him. The guy probably still has every penny he has ever made. Lets hope its a good one tonight!
