Punching power is *meaningless* if you can't find the target. Ask George Foreman after the Ali fight and David Tua after the Lewis fight. Ward has the best defense in the game...
Kovalev will be prepared for some type of tactical affair. No way someone who had the perfect game plan and execution against a seasoned veteran like B-Hops doesn't have well prepared strategies going in. JDJ and Kovalev - the team - has proven to be levels better prepared than his talk indicates. And that's all it is - talk. Now he may still possibly be in for a rude awakening regardless - but it will 100% not be because of Kovalev being ill-prepared, with a game plan of going in and just mindlessly launching right hands.
Finding ways to land effectively often requires some type of strategic planning against tricky styles.
LMAO.. So you think Kovalev will try to *outbox* Andre Ward if his "street fight" strategy doesn't work? The fight is over the minute Kovalev agrees to make it a boxing match - and I think Team TOMATO KAN Krusher knows this...
LMAO. Didn't Hopkins get outboxed by Chad Dawson 3-4 fights prior to facing Kovalev? And you want to use the Hopkins fight as some type of barometer on how the TOMATO KAN Krusher will fare against Andre Ward? It's true, YDKSAB. Lol. Kinda like in the Chilemba fight, eh? Yeah, Kovalev looked very prepared when he gassed out midway through the fight and let that TOMATO KAN go 12 rounds in the process...
No, not "outbox" in the sense you're suggesting. Kovalev will employ the type of tactics he always shows - those designed to help him maximize his chances of landing his devastating power shots. But it will involve a hell of a lot more than a right hand - his jab, his timing, and his ability to catch Ward when between close and long range, when he's briefly transitioning, and finds himself in Sergey's optimal range. Kovalev is good at finding angles, although not always initially. Ward is good at minimizing those good angles, and minimizing the time he spends in his opponent's optimal range. For the record, I think Ward will win these little tactical battles. But there are tons of tactics Kovalev can employ that involve more than just a right hand, where he also isn't "outboxing" Ward in a traditional sense. As I said in my recent video, "Kovalev is much, much more than just a right hand and a mean streak".
Kovalev doesn't seem like the type to play mind games to me. I would take him at his word. Of course, his trainer may have something to say about all of this but it will be interesting to see how Kovalev responds if he is forced to engage in a different type of fight than he wants.
BS Kovalev is very much a boxer and likes to be methodical in his fighting...this is very much a boxing match. If Kovalev really did say this I have lost some confidence in him and will have gained confidence in my Ward UD prediction.
Not sure I like the sound of that, after seeing what Ward has done in the past like against Kessler where he deliberately head butted him,his use of elbows and constant holding it made me think how good Ward would be in a street fight, yes he does have some amazing boxing skills but in the super six I wouldn't of put his wins down to those silky boxing skills it was more his street fighting skills.
Kovalev is a boxer with heavy hands, he is not just a slugger. Kessler, Froch or Bika in their primes get obliterated by Kovalev.
