Kovalev isn't a street fighter or brawler, he's an excellent boxer puncher that just happens to have heavy hands. He would do well to simply try to box Ward from mid range or outside. If he tries rough housing, Ward is gonna maul him.
I honestly believe Kovalev has to jump all over him early, make it as messy, brutal and violent as quickly as possible. If I was him I'd risk a point taken in the first round, low blows, elbows, head, I make sure Ward knew this wasn't going to be a chess match and I certainly wouldn't let Ward relax and get in to a groove.
Easier said than done. Ward is s little smarter than Kovalev thinks. It will not be easy to defeat Ward using just his power.
If he does that Ward will chinch him like he's his long lost brother and make it a shirt fight, so I really hope he doesn't. That would be Beterbiev's best way to fight a guy like Ward, because he can brutally punish people who try to clinch him, but not Kovalev. Kova has to use his boxing ability which he used to school B-Hop with and make the fight his with much harder connects, wearing Ward down.
IMO... Ward's tough enough for a "Street Fight", Ward grew up in the "HOOD". That said... the power of Kovalev should wear Ward down, then Ward loses by TKO.
kovalev punches better with straight arm punching with full extension. and i believe his jab is good enough to stop ward from trying to get inside.
Every truly Great fighter goes into every single fight without a game plan . greats figure out ghetto game plan after a coupleasure, sometimes even a Few rounds . Once they understand what their opponents bring to the table , they adjust accordingly . this is a great fight and I can't pick, I have NO idea if Kovalev blitzes ward or ward controls the krusher
I think it has to be Ward that does that he's the man coming into Kovaklev's weightclass. He kinda needs to do what Porter did to Thurman at the opening bell when he jumped all over Thurman and mauled him on the inside, Thurman was shocked by this early aggression and it threw him off. This would show Kovalev that he's in a street fight and throw him off his game early on. If Ward can fight his fight instead of Kovalev fighting his and getting into a rhythm he will win.
Yeah he needs to keep this fight on the inside Kovalav can't fight backing up and outside away from the mid range where he will be at the end of kovalev's punches if he does this he will win this fight. I also think Ward is smart enough to take away Kovalev's right hand for the most part.
Agreed about taking away the right hand but at some point he will eat one or two; what effect they have will play a large part in how the fight pans out. Kovalev may lose heart if he can't rock Ward. This is the Achilles' Heal of all power punchers: when the power does not have the usual effect, they panic or get disheartened. Now Krusher has more to his game than a big right hand, we all know this but I still feel he will need to know when the right hand lands - and it will - that it fully registers.
That's also a big question when Kovalev lands flush will Ward be able to take it? Ward is smart even if he's hurt by it I expect him to do what PBF did to Mosley immediately clinch and hold to buy time and give himself a chance to recover. Alot of these newer fighters don't know how to react when hurt they simply cover up or try to fire back Ward won't do that.
