You can say he outfought him, but he didn't outbox him.

How on God's green earth could anyone with eyes and a working brain give ward the 12th round ?

Watch that again and see if you still can reasonably gift it to ward

He did. He landed more and threw more. Hit and don't get hit.

He also missed more and the number of punches landed was very similar in most rounds.

So now connect percentage is more important than total punches landed? This is going south.

Ward had better accuracy, better jab and controlled the range for most parts, especially from the 3rd round and on. Kovalev's game changing power won him the rounds, not his boxing skills.

Isn't accuracy, jab and controlling range all done for the express purpose of landing cleaner, harder and more often?

In Kovalev's case, It was power, agression and activity that got him to land harder and land more. And the difference in punch numbers mostly came in the first two rounds. Ward ountlanded him in the majority of the rounds 3 to 12.

Punches missed is obviously a factor. It shows how effective their aggression/defence is.

According to the stats that I saw, in rounds 3, 5, 7, 8, 9 and 11 Ward landed more punches and had a higher connect %.

Even in the rounds where Kovalev landed more, it was only by a tiny amount (except rounds 2 and 10) and Ward still had a higher connect % in all of those rounds except for round 2.

If Ward is making Kovalev miss, it means his defence is being effective and Kovalev's aggression is being ineffective.

So yeah I still wouldn't say Kovalev outboxed Ward in the fight overall.

Exactly how I have it,I know there was many close rounds but overall it's so hard to find seven rounds for Ward when you think he Kovalev was 5 points up after just 4 rounds and even in the close rounds the quality punches came from Kovalev as appose to jab, lunge and hold tactics from Ward.
I get it why Ward is so respected for his skill as a boxer because at times he looks amazing but for the life of me I don't understand how folk can get excited by his jab and wrestle thing,to go toe to toe with SK would of been crazy I accept that but basically all Ward does in his big fights is to just use his jab and single shots and then wrestle in the knowledge that it's not gonna hurt his opponent one bit or am I being a bit harsh on Ward?

Why would Kovalev have to bring something new ? shouldn't it be ward who would have to bring something new considering he got blasted down and hurt multiple times ,lost clearly while fighting with everything he has which could only muster making the 2nd half of the fight close and competitive , first half was terrible for ward
