Fat Dan wants to lay the blame on HBO, but he's an idiot. Look at Stevenson's actions. He never wanted to fight Kovalev. The contract didn't get signed because Stevenson was stringing them all along, while talking to Haymon and using him as leverage. A network don't let a contract sit around. Both parties have to make an agreement. After him signing with Haymon, it was quite clear Stevenson had little intention of staying in the network as his boogie man.
Fat dan is an idiot. I mistakenly used his twitter for the story but after reading the Boxing Scene article i totally changed my viewpoint as HBO were totally in the right. HBO had agreed to a deal for the Stevenson-Fonfara fight and then Al Haymon came in and was trying to blackmail them into paying more which is BS as once a deal is agreed upon, you can't then come back and ask for more money. Anyway why the feck would HBO pay for the Fanfara unless they were guaranteed the Kovalev one? Dosen't make business sense. Fat Dan is a stupid fool who needs to STFU.
I fully support HBO's stance on this matter. They are right not to be blackmailed by Al Haymon. HBO are a channel of integrity, it's the reason they are known for being the best television channel in the world.
We'll have to wait and see how this plays out, but this was the most anticipated fight of the year for me. Utter BS if it doesn't get made...boxing can a cruel mistress sometimes. I've kinda always been excited with Stevensons progress, and the way both he and Kovalev broke out last year made this fight seem almost destined, but I can't blame anyone other than Adonis (and Haymon) if it doesn't get made.
There's an article at the Scene explaining what happened. After agreeing on a purse by both parties earlier in the year for Fonfara, Stevenson came back and asked for more money after signing with that snake Haymon. HBO didn't want to pay more than what was agreed upon for Fonfara, but was willing to give him more if he agree to fight Kovalev in the fall. Stevenson didn't want to fight Kovalev, but wanted more money anyway. HBO decided that they had enough of the BS from Stevenson and said 'f*ck it'. Stevenson and his team are a bunch of slimy snakes. Stevenson is a scum of lowly character and so is his team. I bet Showtime didn't pay that much more for Fonfara after HBO decided they had enough.
Yeah! I can't figure out where Fat Dan's been coming from on this. Steve Kim on his twitter for the past two months has been reporting how HBO was trying to lock down Stevenson-Fonfara contingent on Stevenson agreeing to Kovalev. Stevenson never intended to follow through on the Kovalev fight, he wanted to milk another pay day out of HBO for Fonfara and then goto Showtime for Hopkins. As for Kovalev, HBO can still build him into a star. His style of fighting is such that people will tune in to watch him. There are decent LHW's out there for him to fight, just no stars at the moment.
If Kovalev starts pulling in million plus views fighting guys like Agnew I don't think HBO will sweat he Haymon/Stevenson crap.
And yet they still defend him. Now claiming Kovalev should simply sign with Hayman and jump to Showtime. Should be funny how the Showtime announcing team spin doctor's this, if they even attempt to address the issue. They will probably pretend kovalev does not exist.
