Who says it would get millions of viewers. What does the average HBO show rate? Advertisers look at ratings and secondly the demographic who watches. There was a reason why even when WWE/WCW were pulling in 4 million viewers every Monday night there advertising revenues were low. Advertisers looked at the demographic and saw no real value in paying huge amounts to target kids and adults still into 'goofy' wrestling.
I'm not surprised in the slightest, it's what I've said and many many others have said all along, Ward is not a draw, never had been and never will be. Ward is a very good boxer but has zero charisma and has virtually no fan base.
he seems to have lost more fans than gained them after that fight due to he's display and post fight stupid talk
160k x $60ppv= $9.6mill + gates and advertising, it would have broken even just the TV channel wouldn't have made a killing That's like Chris Eubank was saying the 1st $ should go to the fighters
I'm concerned about the rematch now. I wanted this to do big numbers so there'd be enough incentive to stage one. Now, we're between Scylla and Charybdis- Ward won't want to take less than the $5 million he just got paid, and Roc won't want to lose millions again. Something's got to give or else this thing's going to set up camp in "development hell".
No definitely not, not even 10 million viewers would suffice to 150k PPV buys. That's why PPV is so heavily relied on to make things happen.
Kovalev was basically a unknown so this wasnt a ppv fight to many at all And ward was basically the only notable name plus ME & RN didnt promote this fight at all I guess me & rn expected the hard cores to come out & support as much as they masturbated over this fight but whatever's Lol at bringing up ggg he did 97 thou & youll added the maybe between that & 150 thou just to save face & embellish So the equivalent would be ward kov did 160 to 250 if we trying embellish it And lemueax is a bigger draw than kov overall
Given the outcome, resulting controversy, and the fact that the first fight was pretty engrossing, I suspect the numbers would be quite a bit higher for the rematch. Honestly, given the lacklustre quality of the under-card and the fact that neither guy really has a huge fan base stateside, these numbers are probably about as good as could be expected.
What a financial disaster for the Promoters. Because of the Decision in the first fight I would expect the numbers to be even less in the rematch. Just goes to show for all his faults Al Haymon is right about one thing: PPV is a dying business model in Boxing. Other avenues are going to have to be explored.
