I kinda think these are decent numbers. Ward has never been a big draw. He has always been that guy who couldn't sell out his own arena.
Did you guys really expect it to do Canelo numbers?

I think you're right that the numbers would be bigger. Hopefully it comes off.

As for the numbers itself, it's hard to ask for more given the profile of each fighter here and that ~2 million people bought combat PPV's in the two weeks immediately prior to it. It's not a bad number once you account for that, and that's about the range I had pegged for it.

Cable network takes 50% of the PPV. So 160K x $30 + gate.

As has been said, without PPV fight would not have happened.

Should lower the cost of them tho imo.

Pretty bad all things considered but hopefully PPV dies. For those comparing Golovkin, he didn't carry that 150k on his own. Lemieux obviously isn't a star but that fight promised fire works. Ward has a small fan base and Kovalev doesn't generate nearly as much buzz as Golovkin, yet the fight still did a bit more. I think there's a number of factors: 1) quality of match up, 2) American fighter (assuming it's only PPV in US, odd considering he doesn't normally generate big numbers), 3) Pac's PPV was one week before.

Someone mentioned Anthony Joshua; Joshua is big in the UK.

Think they do mate. Add the gate on and a next to nothing undercard, foreign tv and advertising and I'd say they lost a small amount.

Sucks to be Kova. Lost a decision he should have been given and earned 3 mil less!

It's not a dying model. It's just the US doesn't have the box office stars.

Over here in the UK PPV is just fine.

Don't forget UFC sold well over 1.5 mil itself the week before, along with the Pac fight. While I'm sure not all those UFC fans are boxing fans, casual fight fans were already sold to between that and Pac. ME and Roc probably saw that writing on the wall, which is why they didn't invest much in the buildup. They really only went after hardcore fans who were going to buy it anyways.

As for PPV dying, we can only afford to let it die if the networks ramp their investment back up. Otherwise a number of these fringe fights just won't get made at all.

    Hahhahhaha

    Yea right

    Maybe yea, but not in.....Montreal

Kovalev made more money AND generated more money in just TWO fights in MTL than David's whole career in Canada

Lol at you James, u clueless GGG hater

If I wanna know whats happening under Eubanks mattress I would pay attention to you, but your not gonna tell me whats happening in my hometown

Jean Pascal & Bute we're the only big draws in Canada

I'm not saying Lemieux will never be a huge draw, just that he isnt at the moment, got his cherry popped real soon by that mexican dude that GGG sparked in two rds THEN lost a local matchup to Joachim Alcine, all right here at home

    But u wouldnt know that

160 k doesnt even cover Ward purse

9.6 Mil - 50% to the networks that sell the PPV - 7.5% HBO fee for a PPV- all that other smaller expenses that add up like Buffer and ish - the small % that fightrrs got out of ppv sells ( 5 & 2 we're just guarantees)...and you'll see that promoters lost tons of $$$

But its normal, neither HAD A FAN BASE and they were shown on ppv with little to zero marketing

And some people wonder why GGG didnt bother going up to 168 to fight Ward. Hmmmm lets see, stay at 160lbs and get a big money fight vs Canelo which could make you a household name or move up to fight ward in a fight you could lose or even get robbed in for far less money and notoriety in front of a crowd of crickets.

Exactly ufc has a box office star. As long as you have the right fighter people are prepared to pay.
