Kovalev, Ward, Stevenson, and the Hopkins mystery opponent (Video discussion)

Great video, good assessment of the situation. It really saved the day considering all the useless flood with Canelo/Khan (I'm kind of shocked to see that fight being made) topics today.

It looks like you can eliminate Golovkin too as Hopkins' potential opponent, as GGG is facing Dominic Wade next.

If Hopkins is really coming back for the final fight, it's really a big question, who could the opponent be considering that so many guys are unavailable.

I doubt that he would fight Andre Ward, but then again, if they are going to make Kovalev/Ward PPV, they would need to do everything possible to boost the popularity of both fighters before the fight finally arrives.

HBO did relatively good job with Kovalev, but if they want PPV, I assume that they need to boost the interest in Ward as well. In that way, I could see Ward/Hopkins perhaps making some sense. But then again, a victory over Barrera would raise the Ward's profile on HBO as well. Definitely no easy task to predict Hopkins' opponent.

But just for the sake of it (not that I believe that's going to happen), I'm going to drop Braehmer into the mix. He is looking for an opponent since Oosthuizen has pulled out, so who knows.

Hopkins is fighting James Degale or Badu Jack!

 

exactly hbo basically had an agreement for kov vs chickenson but chickenson ran away to showtime at the last minute.

 

I can't see it being James DeGale, if he's announcing it soon. DeGale has his mandatory coming up against Uzcategui. Being that he's IBF champion, they would unlikely let Hopkins fight for the title with him coming off a loss and not having fought for over a year, plus he's not ranked by them.

Plus DeGale is with Haymon, which could make it difficult, not impossible though, as I do remember hearing DeGale was on the same deal as Khan, which seems to be a different deal from other Haymon clients as Khan has secured a fight with a Golden Boy fighter and has been in talks with a Top Rank fighter, and DeGale's actual promoter, Eddie Hearn has mention Hopkins-DeGale in the past.
