Kovalev-Ward: Swing Rounds and Clean Punches

    Stiff jabs that rocked Kovalev's head back. What did Kovalev do that round that was impressive? That first combination of his, which only landed clean on the first jab, is not more effective. I left out smaller scoring punches for both of them but Ward had a few more. In terms of the best punches of the round, Ward's were clearly more clean and effective. It doesn't get more effective than snapping an opponent's head back. Ward blocked Kovalev's right hand.

    Side of the head counts! Not one of his better shots but not any less clean than Kovalev's power punches that round.

    When Kovalev's jab landed in round 1 that clearly hurt Ward. More damaging than snapping his head back. Kovs power shots all do more damage than one of those jabs. A jab is an arm punch, those power shots were thrown with Kovs weight transfer.

    As Ive said, it's only about damage inflicted.

    I have watched thousand of fights for over 25 years. If kovalev is a popular fighter, the score will read like this 117-110 116-111 and 114-113. And trust me there will be no outcry. It's only a close fight if you wanted it to be. And 114-113 score for ward is the only score he could have won, and the 3 judges did just that.
    Having said that I do admire Ward technical brilliance and his resolve although I have preference to kovalev style.

    Kovalev won that fight and that is what everyone saw. Sure it was a close fight to some, to others it was wide. I am sure nationalistic bias has something to do with those few people calling it a close fight. But to each his own.

    Dishonorable and disrespectful people tend to really annoy me. And at this point its pretty irrefutable, Ward is a piece of ****.

    This, Wards punches had the same effect as a palm strike to the face, no effect at all. KOVA WINS THE EFFECTIVE EXCHANGE.

    Ward is no more dishonorable and disrespectful than 95% of the boxers out there now. I personally think he is a pretty classy guy. He is a family man, doesn't beat up his wife and you never hear about him doing bad things outside the ring. Ward is not humble but he wouldn't be the fighter that he is if he was. You seem to have issues with all the fighters that you pick against who then go on to win. Just saying.

    I've always personally disliked Ward, to me he comes across as an emotionally detached, smug, arrogant, disingenuous, insincere, pious and conceited fake.

    He hasn't mugged any old ladies, pimped or raped any underage girls or assaulted his wife as far as I know. That's better than a lot of boxers out there. Ward is arrogant, no doubt. So is Kovalev and every other top fighter out there. You don't get to their position without being arrogant. I have seen no signs that Ward is a hypocrite. Quite frankly, I wish more boxers carried themselves as well as Ward does but that's just me. Everyone has their own perspective.

    What does that matter? Kov did WAY more damage which should have easily had him win the fight.

    Neither has Trump and people hate his guts, some people I just don't like, I get a vibe off of them that rubs me the wrong, Ward has always been one of those people. Is he preferable to Mayweather and Stevenson, sure, but I wouldn't say that's setting the bar very high. Thurman, Trout and Porter to me, come across as great and very cool guys I'd like to hang out with, Ward comes across as a sanctimonious guy with zero personality, repellant in the extreme. Even you have to admit Kovalev is far more likable and easy to root for person on an emotional level.

    Watching live I scored widely for Kovalev and after watching this have realised that he was even more effective with his jab than before

    The majority of the damage that he did was in the first couple of rounds, though. From round 3 on, Kovalev landed the harder shots, but he wasn't affecting Ward nearly as much as he did at the start. And while Ward sustained more facial abuse, Kov didn't emerge unscathed.
