Isn't that because he isn't trained by Roach but Pac and Khan have been? Quigg was swarming at the weekend. I think that's the Roach way...

Personally I don't think it's a good move. JDJ and Kov have a winning formula. IMHO, Kov beat Ward, a P4P level opponent! This is coming from a guy that wanted Ward to win! Kov is undefeated, has an extremely high KO record and beat the a top 3 P4P opponent in his last fight! I really don't see what the problem is with his trainer.

Roach would be a terrible trainer for Kovalev. One of Kovalev's best attributes are his understandings of distance and timing. Without these, his power would be easily negated. If Kovalev was trained by Freddie Roach, Hopkins would've schooled him with footwork alone. Freddie Roach sucks at footwork.

Pacquiao couldn't figure out how to cut off the ring against old man Mosely and his footwork only looked good against flat-footed bums. His defense also sucked. Once Marquez knocked him out, Pacquiao actually became a more complete, though less explosive fighter.

Even Khan's footwork with Roach sucked. All of that stupid bouncing just had him wasting energy and getting knocked out by punches that he should've been able to take better if he wasn't jumping around messing up his own equillibrium.

Chavez Sr, Pacquiao, Provdnikov, Khan, and other fighters trained by Roach were EASILY exploited by fighters with footwork. They all had the power ti have a puncher's chance, but that power was there before and after Roach.

Robert is a far better trainer than Kovalev. If Kovalev, and GGG went to Robert that would be quite scary tbh.

JDJ is a good fit for Kovalev, Roach would not improve him.

You can tell who knows their **** and who doesn't. Roach also was very lax as a trainer. A lot of his fighters do what they want and this is solely bad for someone like Kovalev who has a track record for not listening to any of his trainers as it is.

He would just be wasting money. There's a lot of myths surrounding Roach and he gets overrated. The only thing I give him credit for is his part in picking opponents when they're low hanging fruit and encouraging catch weights and rehydration clauses to further tip scales even further. Freddy knows a shot fighter when he sees one.

You're mad dumb. Pacquiao's ambush/swarmer style is about disrupting the opponent's timing. Cutting the ring off is something that would compromise his style because ring cutting requires planting your feet and stalking. For Pacquiao to set himself like that results in him being less effectively offensively. And Mosley was running for dear life after the KD and was in survival mode.

    Khan's footwork sucks, though.

In my opinion Roach is done, he is just not in good enough health now.

He might be great to bring in to a camp now and give a little clinic, give a few pointers and advice but as for a full time trainer, no way.

Why didn't you just outright say that you hate him because he's Manny Pacquiao's trainer?

I think in the next 5 years we will see a new generation of trainers. I feel bad for typing this but I think as an elite level trainer - Roach may not be on that level anymore (he sure was great). I personally think Fortune with Roach as an assistant makes sense.

I think a lot of Roach's success was due to him having good fighters more than down to his own skills. Besides Pacquiao a decade ago, I've never seen him take a fighter and remold them to make them more effective. I've never seen him craft a great fight plan that led to his fighters beating a superior opponent. I've never seen him build a great fighter from the ground up. A lot of his successful fighters have come to him as successful fighters.

The only guy in the game right now that's done that is Nacho Beristain. Lomachenko's father might have some of that too, but it's too soon to tell since he doesn't have a lot of other guys to boast about. Mayweather's uncle only has Mayweather after all and Nacho has trained what, like thirty champions. Generations of champions have grown under his tutelage from Zaragoza in the 80s, Ricardo Lopez in the 90s, and Juan Manuel Marquez in the 00s. Since Manny Steward died, he's the only guy I'm sure is a great trainer.

It feels like there is a dearth of talented trainers right now, like the heyday of Ray Arcel, Eddie Futch, and Angelo Dundee are far in the past.

Roach doesn't teach his fighters to cut off the ring, which is one of Kovalev's best attributes.
