He does everything well, certainly (not that he ever has to throw uppercuts). However, after watching a lot of Kovalev's earlier fights, the thing I noticed that consistently destroys his competition is ending his combinations with a sort of jab-hook. It's simple boxing to end a combo with a jab, but Kovalev is so effective with it. The usual sequence goes something like 1-2-3-3-2-...then as his opponent moves away he nails them with a simple jab or jab/hook that they never see coming. This punch ends up doing the damage. The reality is that this guy is KO'ing people with a jab; a very powerful jab they never see. In the future, anyone who has a footwork based defense that faces Kovalev is going to have serious problems. His ability to move with an opponent and punch with power is incredible and extremely rare. A style that COULD trouble him is a shoulder rolling James Toney type who can counter effectively. There are parts of Kovalev that aren't fantastic; his boxing ability as a whole is very good, but not incredible. The power, however, makes up for any lack in his game. His chin from what I've seen is solid as well, watch the second Boone fight where he gets cracked (audibly) with a counter left hook and looks completely unphased. It's going to take a very good fighter to beat this guy, and I don't think Adonis is the one to do it.
This thread got no love, but that jab-hook at the end of a combo is exactly the punch that put Agnew down in round 2 tonight.
adonis would have to grow a pair to find out. that being said, i didn't see hbo show one single replay of the low blow in the first round. horrible production.
As i've always said, KOvalev is a volume power puncher that can fire off rapid straight shots, but tonight he showed a new facet to his game. He created openings tonight against a guy who came to just last and make sergey look not so dangerous. It didn't work and it showed that SK is the undisputed king at 175. Adonis and Hopkins both know it and being over at showtime means that the world won't see it proven.
Ward has been doing that for years. It's one of his main tools. But Kovalev's power makes it all the more deadly.
Kovalev is a power puncher. His best weapon is a willing partner. A stationary opponent with no ring movement and no jab. Against this type of opponent, he will always look good. H2H, I have him beating GGG.
Keep hating derrick. Kov is the goods. That's why he's chased off all the lightheavy's to another network, except Pascal. I'm sure you'll find an excuse when KOvalev does what Hopkins, Froch and Nobody else has done to pascal. KO him. Then i'm sure you'll come up with another ALT to bash another white fighter.
Pascal is not a great boxer, but he is no Agnew either. That will be a different fight then what we saw tonight. Pascal will keep distance, but he is basically flat footed also and he keeps his hands down too low like Froch trying to do a Roy Jones. Still, Pascal won't have his back to the ropes and keep the fight in the middle of the ring. he has a much better chance to beat Kovalev than Agnew. One thing for sure, the fight won't go pass 5 and that doesn't mean that Pascal will be the one falling. Pascal has a good chin and fights strong for the first 5 rounds.
Kovalev will knock Pascal out easily.....................Kovalev will not fight like Bute....................
Pascal does nothing like 2:30 of the round cuz he knows he will gas in 4 rounds. Kovalev would tool him. This guy gasses even tho he doesn't really fight the whole round.
