If Braehmer beats Maccarinelli, which I think he will, Kovalev should fight him. It would answer some questions about Kovalev's chin, and is a good opponent to put on his resume, which some people have said is not the best. Though, to be fair, LHW isn't exactly brimming with talent other than Kovalev, Stevenson, and Hopkins.

Another good opponent would be Pascal. Not only would beating him give a showdown with Stevenson even more hype, but we would see how Kovalev deals with an unorthodox, athletic boxer.

    What are your thoughts?

I'd like to see him take on Shumenov. Pascal would run from him all night.

Tommy Karpency reportedly called him out last week...after beating Rayco Saunders in a non-televised 6-round UD. :yep

if kovalev wants to crack the big time at LHW, both braehmer and maccarinelli won't help him one bit
he needs to do what GGG is doing - get US exposure

Kovalev will probably become the lineal champion even if he loses against Stevenson. Stevenson is old for a fighter, and will have a few big money fights, then retire. Kovalev is still relatively young at 30, and could fight for the vacant belt when Stevenson retires.

    :?

Brähmer is a legit top five light heavy.

    Beating him certainly wouldn't hurt.

it wouldn't hurt, but fighting a lesser LHW in the US (and who regularly fights in the US) would do him more good, because braehmer is just another rich german paper champ with zero US profile

its like saying geale beating sturm would help him get a Martinez fight. the belt would be leverage, sure, but it's useless chasing big fights unless you have a US profile - because it just won't happen

Your right, but GGG is also taking the time to fight 1-2 times a year in Europe in order to keep up his relevance and popurlarity over there. Kovalev should follow the same blueprint. Taking on Braehmer in Germany would be an excellent way to supplement his 2-3 big HBO fights in America, and build popularity in both hemispheres.

I'd like to see Kovalev v Braehmer.
Braehmer has the WBA World LHW belt. As long as he holds that, he should be in line to face the winner of Hopkins v Shemenov(in theory).

Pascal would get countered early which in turn would lead to a KO

    can't argue with that
he has the 'wow factor' but he does need to start courting the US networks

Kovalev is looking forward to a fight with Stevenson.................Kovalev would destroy Pascal and Pascal knows it. Hopkins will not fight Kovalev or Stevenson...........Hopkins lost to Dawson!

Hopkins was actually quoted on fightnews (the day of his birthday fairly recently) saying he wanted to unify this year, so let's see...

There gonna have to throw some serious cash at Pascal to take that fight when Hopkins is sitting right there for a rematch.

HBO are already pretty high on Kovalev, and I think they'll be wanting at least a coupla fights for him this year (Cedric Agnew's been mentioned I think, and hopefully Stevenson towards the end of the year). Fonfara woulda been nice but it looks like Sttevenson got in there.

Braehmer is good; a very skilled and tricky fighter and would be good test for Kovalev, but previous attempts by other beltholders (Cleverly and Shumenov) always seem to fall through. If Kovalev could get him in the ring however, it's certainly a fight he should take.
