Well, the step #3 failed... Luckily, though, there were two #3 steps. So, that helped, the rematch is successful. #4 is out of the question as well, obviously. Fighting Badou Jack at this point won't help Kovalev on his road to greatness. But Marcus Browne would be a very good win, I agree. And it would help boost Kovalev's confidence even more.
At first I thought so as well, but then I asked myself what if he needs a little bit more time with the new trainer? Or even their approach to making weight is radically different now (and it wasn't optimal for the Alvarez rematch). So, it's kind of a catch-22 for Sergey — some time to experiment wouldn't hurt, but Kovalev simply doesn't have it — he's quite old (for a professional boxer) already. By the way, I'm not even sure Browne would be an easier opponent for him than Bivol.
