That's actually kind of sad that even guys with good legacies (Kong was a 5x Lumpinee and even made a moderately successful crossover into Western boxing, defeating countryman Poontarat who just months earlier had worn the WBC super flyweight title and getting himself ranked; fought twice for a world title himself and didn't get blown out either time) are being encouraged to drag themselves into the ring as shells of themselves and sacrifice their old, shopworn bodies (or if all of it really is 100% staged and there's no real danger of physical harm, then at least they're sacrificing their dignity & legacies) for a cheap spectacle.
Sure Kong's pedigree is as good as you can get. I'd say he's top 30 on that immense list of golden age MT ATG warriors. Kong's legacy is is chiselled in the blood and guts of fellow elite ATGs. Your right his boxing career wasn't bad either, he only lost twice both time against World Champions and he put Khaosai on the deck! But these kind of "exhibition" fights are nothing to these guys, just a bit of fun. They're in front of tourists who cnant tell they are staged, have no idea of their importance of the guys in the sport and are usually in small venues. The Thai mentality is very much about "sanook" which means fun, they are very reluctant to take anything too seriously, they really do live in the present. There is zero ego with fighters and their accomplishments like there is in the west. No expectation or the entitlement you get with fighters like Broner, Mayweather etc. When they see it with guys like Floyd they really don't understand it, the pride and hubris. Just check out Srisaket Sor Rungvisai's attitude and manner in post and pre fight interviews, it's the norm not the exception with Thais.
I guess if they're personally okay with it and don't mind their legacy feeling "tarnished" like a Western fighter would, and they're having fun & getting paid and see the whole thing as overall a net positive, then it really isn't doing any harm. But yourself, from a fan's perspective, does it not make you cringe to see Kong take an L to a guy that, if they met in their primes, wouldn't have been worthy of sharing a ring with him and in all likelihood would've been destroyed quickly?
Sure, I agree, absolutely it does, it's super cringe. In the west we put elite fighters on pedestal for life, come rain or shine very little can tarnish it, and we tend to polish it with time. In Thailand these guys were never put on a pedestal by anybody in any serious way, sure they were on the front cover of a magazine many times, but they never really crossed over into everyday Thai society. They were unaware of their immortality, they just needed to keep making money and follow orders. These guys just have no sense of legacy at all or that they are true fighting royalty. At first it's kinda weird, but then you kinda get it once you hang around with these guys enough and spend enough time in Thailand, it's gone it's done....as they would say " Mai B'lai!" which roughly translates as never mind, chill out, it doesn't matter! I admire them for that.
