In an era where no one proved much of anything Ortiz having a case for being the best HW in 2016 and 2017 is worth its weight in gold.

Given where the division was after Fury dropped the belts Ortizs interim WBA lineage of Jennings, Thompson and Scott(who he fought a few weeks after being stripped) was better than Joshua beating Martin, Breazeale and Molina. Fury didn't have anything to compare to because he didn't fight until 2018 and didn't beat Wilder until 2020. So what did Fury or anyone else prove in that era? Timeline wise Ortiz fought the best Wilder any top fighter did. Ortiz was 40 by the second fight and he was almost shutting out Wilder before the KO that loss doesn't do anything to debunk the idea Ortiz had been the best HW 2 or 3 years prior.

After the Scott fight which got made before Ortiz was stripped Ortiz did not get top opponents until Wilder as he was no longer considered a champion. While AJ got to defend a belt against Wlad, Takam and eventually Parker and Ruiz. AJ being elevated while Ortiz was dropped was really just arbitrary politics as was him being an interim champ while Martin v Glazkow and Stiverne v Arreola were for full belts. Officially Ortiz lost his world title status because he didn't fight the great Alexander Ustinov not because he was lacking in any way as a boxer. Who says Ortiz doesn't beat Wlad like Fury or AJ if given the chance? 43 year old Ortiz doing well against Ruiz only adds to the question marks.

Ortiz in a close fight, but his southpaw stance takes away Pulev’s main weapon, the jab.
