I really don't know what the **** Kung Fu actually is. But I've been meaning to bring this up; the Karate style stance -- I think it can and is really revolutionizing the sport. That being, unlike the squared up boxing or kickboxing stance -- the turned torso and wide spread legs.

The Kōkutsu-dachi'esque stance keeps the fighter at safe distance as well as maintaining the ability to stuff the takedown. Lyoto Machida rode this all the up to an undefeated record and LHW championship.

I've seen newer generational fighters implement this. Rory MacDonald (he really perfected it in his fight against Penn, even to a point where the superman punch was thrown with ease and fluidity), Erick Silva, Stephen Thompson, amongst others. St. Pierre, Benson Henderson also dabble in it. All I can think of off the top of my head.

Anyway, tell me if I'm on to anything...

    Kōkutsu-dachi stance

well..i have noticed in general guys fighting at more of angel....

really, a traditional boxing stance is less squared up than the mma version of boxing stance....in general mma trainers have taught guys to stay squared up to avoid being taken down easily...

however, i do think one can do an effective sprawl from a angled stance..its just that you can't do the basic sprawl (where you just put your upper body forward while trusting both hip back) instead its a slightly more advanced sprawl.

as far as what kung fu is..its really any of the martial arts that come out of china...as such its actually a pretty wide variety of things. I think wing chung has one or two useful things..but for the most part its shirt again a guy who doesnt "play" by the wing chung rules.

what do you mean inefective? Where do you think that karate, jujitsu, and muy tai comes from. shoalin has grappling. Machida still throws a reverse punch . that is effective. If the rules stated that you can strike behind the head the karate kung fu people would never be taken down. Wing Chun Kung fu is great for striking. A punch is a punch a kick a kick and a block is a block

Most stand up in MMA these days is in some form coming out of MT where we stand pretty squared up.

I studied Padral Serey for years, which is the Cambodian version of Muay Thai. You need to study Asian History and or martial arts again a kick is a kick and a punch is a punch.

i guess in theory some interaction occurred....hell many feel that the martial arts actually come from the ancient Greeks (which my euro centric ass would consider awesome) namely by Alexander the Great and his armies.

The various forms of kung fu are ineffective in sanctioned MMA because the idea is to incapacitate your enemy by attacking open, soft, and vital points. As well as ripping and tearing with certain hand manipulations. Also, like one of the above posters mentioned, styles also revolve around the use of a weapon.

Kung Fu as many other martial arts are mainly for self defense and not offense

I am 60 years old and I was in vietnam I continued my studies from an air force officer from Cambodia in Houston Texas actually we worked out together . I am sure that you know Cambodian and US history. I still do bag work and do 70 0r 80 kicks a day with each leg for me thqat is enough I donot want hip replacement I have already had knee surgery. I have never practiced Kung Fu but I practice Yanf style tai chi. You should know that akick is a kick and a punch is a punch just different techniques to deliver it I see no difference in the big scheme of things.

Possibly but where the a fighting arts find their roots are in isolated places to protect themselves among the warlords. mankind has always practiced martial skills to protect hinself and his community
