Another headclash, Melindo got the worst of it this time, back and forth close war, a lot of holding, but Taguchi sealed it in the last 20 seconds with a flurry that shook up Melindo.

Glad to hear Melindo is being plucked from orbit and sent crashing back down to earth.

I saw among the boxing hipsterati on Twitter a lot of whining that he was passed over as the clear deserving Fighter of the Year for 2017 and I was just like "Huh? :dunno"

Talk about people being easily swayed and overeating the **** outta someone based on a decent name win or two (Julius Indongo to the courtesy desk, please :D) without paying context any mind.

I'm the biggest Yaegashi booster you'll ever find but a KO win over the shot to bits husk of him in 2017 is virtually meaningless. Follow that up with a SD over Hekkie Budler, a Malignaggi type who made do with being a feather-fists to become a longtime above-average belt holder (but never truly special), a guy with like a dozen extremely close fights on his record, several ending in split or majority decision, and by no means all versus world beaters - and this is the "monster" that everyone discovered in 2017 and is supposed to have enjoyed this massive breakout year? Um, nah. I haven't seen the Yaegashi nor Budler fights but I've seen a bunch of Melindo's older fights. He's okay, not great, wouldn't even say very good at world level. I doubt he suddenly became elite in 2017, and especially wouldn't interpret the results as indicitave of that knowing what I do about Yaegashi's decline (after so many wars) and where the skillful but eminently beatable Hekkie Budler fits into the picture.

Taguchi rocked a badly bloodied gruesome looking Melindo, who at this point resembles a zombie from a Lucio Fulci film throughout the round to win it easily.

    118-110 Taguchi

117-111 and 116-112 are fine as well.

    Couldn't agree more.:deal:

I picked Taguchi by KO, and goddamn it he probably would have got it if the ref hadn't inexplicably had the ref look at Melindo with like a minute and a half to go right after he'd been rocked.
