Sloppy slugfest. Diego "La Joya" Cháves - once a world class welterweight prospect/contender - is a shade of his prime self, in a life & death curtain jerker with a Colombian brawler who seems destined for a career of curtain jerkers.

The commentators have said the word "sucio" multiple times - which bilingual folks (and WWE fans, courtesy of Dominik Mysterio) will know means "dirty" in English. Often paired with the word puño. Dirty fist, as in foul. Yep, plenty of those, check.

 

Tarjeta BDP has it level.

 

Heck of a lot of clean shots to be taking at 39 years old.

I'd say all the worse because Jhan "El Guerrero" Ubarnes looks to be the naturally larger man (with eight of his ten victories coming by stoppage) - but a glance at his record shows that he started all the way down at super feather. Weird. His back is enormous compared with La Joya's.

 

Possible path to success for Cháves with the quick surprise waist-twisting hook up top from behind a peekaboo guard. He's scoring it well and timing it when Ubarnes is loading up on shots, maximizing its effectiveness.

 

If he gets the nod tonight (assuming neither succumbs to fatigue and gets stopped down the stretch) Cháves may want to consider retiring off this one. He is coming off several multiple-loss skids, with only a victory or two breaking them up. Lost his last two coming into this.

 

This is a rock 'em sock 'em robots style donnybrook, not lacking for entertainment...it's just really bumming me out to see Cháves barely taking rounds from a guy like this.

 

Tarjeta BDP reads 77-75 Cháves through eight. That's about right. Could have it 78-74 or a draw pushing it a point in either direction - but no fewer than a couple of rounds for Ubarnes ,and you probably couldn't reasonably have the visitor up (meaning he's definitely not taking a decision here in Buenos Aires)

 

Cháves must have known he was enough ahead to coast down the stretch and suddenly became an outside shuffling potshot-jab-off-the-hip boxer in the last couple of rounds.

Damn - homeboy went from drawing with Desert Storm to drawing with...Jhan Ubarnes.

Granted, the former was in 2014.

 

La Joya gave a lengthy interview but it was a bit too rapido for me to parse out whether he gave any hints at future career decisions. Just made out bits and pieces, thumping his chest and talking about his (or his opponent's) corazon and thanking all the gente.

Any native speakers catch it and want to shed a bit of light on what he said?
