Geovany Bruzón Álvarez vs. German García Montes, 10 rounds @ bridgerweight

 

BoxRec lists this as for the WBC's vacant Latino title but the commentators and ring announcer both declared it for the incipient bridgerweight title (weight limit 224lbs).

 

Bruzón, a lean 6'4" tall Cuban, is listed on BoxRec as orthodox but has started out southpaw here. Dominating with quick accurate power shots. Leading with uppercuts, just brazen. Think we might be heading for a KO1.

 

Montes, a gunslinger with a 7-2 record (all seven wins and one loss by KO) is able to survive the round by shelling up, clinching, and sometimes throwing hard shoveling body combos. Bruzón countering him to bits when he does anything else.

Something matchmaker Guy Taylor cooked up, showcases for unsung international talents from various divisions, both genders. The commentators were chatting it up and blowing smoke up Taylor's ass with compliments before this co-main event started.

 

The second round started pretty much where the first left off, but a minute and change in García Montes landed a hurtful body shot which Bruzón never seemed to recover from, looking disjointed and getting wailed on until the bell.

This is my first ever bridgerweight fight. (since I refused to pay to watch Rivas vs. Louis II on PPV last month )

I am enjoying it.

Not the highest skill level, but a good clean slugfest.

 

Montes' nose busted up and bloodied from nonstop counters, probably lost round three but hanging in there and looking dangerous, going to make Bruzón earn this victory every step of the way.

 

This is seriously like a movie, just trading rounds back and forth, German heroically ralling in the fourth plowing into the body and then raking Bruzón with overhands when his guard comes down. Oops, takeover from Bruzón with a minute left - his offense is just so much sharper and smoother, but he is continually drawn into brawling exchanges inside, more the wheelhouse of Montes. Commentators are saying this could be such an easy contest if he just boxed, as he clearly has the potential to do. Just not the ring IQ to stick to.

 

Another mini-rally by Montes just before the bell keeps the round just barely in his court.
