Yeah, I think there is a key role for TV to step in and put more pressure on the promoters to work together. The Board have to be careful in what they do, due to the 'restraint of trade' curve ball that could be thrown if they have a policy that a member feels is encumbering their business. The board used to have a rule that a rival promoter could not put on a show in the London area within two weeks once a promoter (usually Levine at that time due to his monopoly on the sport). That rule ultimately got changed due to 'restraint of trade'. A similar thing happened when Wazza came on the scene and wanted to change the rule to bring in live televised boxing, rather than delayed. So whatever the board do they need to be careful of the 'restraint of trade' card being played against them, but I am sure they can do something proactive, question is what?
I remember that rule. Levine just used to book his cards in early in the years and all the other potential promoters were ****ed.
He also controlled the Southern Area Council and the big London venues in his day, so everyone else was ****ed.
You can't force promoters to work together, but I do believe fighters' contracts should allow then to step out of contract if: a) the promoter cannot deliver the fights or finance promised b) the fighter is offered a more lucrative or professionally advantageous fight by another promoter. Obviously the promoter would retain their contractual rights, plus a reasonable compensation (2.5% as opposed to whatever the normal % is), but it would free things up more and encourage more cooperation.
Good points. A BBBoC contract that gives the boxer more rights would help enormously. The board take a lot of money out of the sport from their fees to their members and from the shows etc, they need to become more proactive, these issues are nothing new. Harry Mullan used to print pages in Boxing News to highlight the work of the likes of Professional boxers association and also an association that was once set up to facilitate better collaboration amongst small hall promoters (forget the name) which is why I am pleased to see the trade magazine - Boxing Monthly take the lead with this current topic (as per the recent editorial). But, the point about the boxers contract has always been a discussion point. I would like a rule in the UK whereby the manager and promoter cannot be a joint role, you can either be one or the other, it is a clear conflict of interests. And on top of that, there should be oversight to ensure that a family member or connection cannot assume the other role on behalf of the interested party. Also, a standard contract issued from the board that is used for all manager-boxer relations - proforma that gives a fair deal to the boxer.
there would be more cross promotional fights if the board ordered more mandotory bids then the winner would promote the fight on there channel like Bellew fighting on sky and Clev fought on ITV4 under hennessey
I don't think it's that big a problem in the UK especially compared with how the US promoters are. That said, I want to see more of Sky telling promoters "Deliver it!"
