You know, Lacy was a product of hype and no one can ever doubt such a thing.... But... Pre-Calzaghe, the guy was knocking out most opponents emphatically, he fought a relative high level of guys at SMW and had defeated enough guys that people were starting to compare his resume to Calzaghe and say he had beaten better fighters. He also had a very impressive amateur career behind him Post-Calzaghe, after he took a sustained beating for 12 rounds, was busted up and dropped for the first time, he then started struggling to show any power, being knocked out by C level talent - having previously easily defeated B level talent. Can a fighter be knocked out of his prime in one single fight without being brutally knocked out? This is less about Calzaghe, who we all know is fan-****ing-tastic so lets not make it about Calzaghe. But, was Lacy actually a decent fighter before Calzaghe and utter **** afterwards, or was Lacy just fortunate in his high KO percentage despite facing some pretty credible challengers pre-Calzaghe? Pre Calzaghe - Best 5 wins 1. Robin Reid - failed to answer the bell after round 7, Reid was definitely at the tail end of his championship career but had been good enough to previously defeat undefeated Magee and take Sven Ottke close in his homeland (close enough that some felt it was a robbery) 2. Syd Vanderpool - TKO 8 - Vandepool was on a long winning streak having been defeated by B-Hop at 160, had wins over Glen Johnson (who everyone seems to love rating when it comes to B-Hop) and won a pretty easy eliminator decision before Lacy. 3. Donnell Wiggins - TKO 8 - another fighter on a decent winning streak with a win over champion Danny Green in his recent history, was a long time WBC continental champion and top ten fighter 4. Omar Sheika - UD12 - Tough fight for Lacy who struggled with the way Sheika moved and targeted him, Sheika was very near the end of his credible career and was dropping many decisions but still seen as a good gatekeeper fighter 5. Scott Pemberton - TKO2 - Easy fight for Lacy against a guy who was a warrior most his career and at the very end of his career, had a credible win streak prior to Lacy wth his last loss coming against Brewer, a champion in the division Post Calzaghe - Performances Went life and death with Typsko but credited as having a gutsy performance due to torn rotator cuff early in fight (same injury that had Vitali pull out on Byrd) Went life and death with Manfredo and not once troubled him with power, was lucky to get the win Another ugly win against Mendoza before being beaten easily by Taylor, starched by an old Roy Jones Jr and finally losing to a club fighter in his final fight to date. Hype or no hype..... Lacy was a much lesser fighter following the beat down from Calzaghe than he was prior to the beat down, how much hype was there in reality is the question, it's hard to judge due to how easily beaten Lacy was by Calzaghe,
I was never on the hype train but admittedly had only seen him fight twice once against Sheika and once against Vanderpool, the uppercut he nailed Vanderpool with was amazing but he always seemed rather sluggish to me.
there are no honest answers to this guys career his fans vanished as soon as the final bell rung for the calzaghe fight
didn't think lacy was that great to begin with.. he just had a cool nickname that he didn't even live up to.
He wasn't starched. He may have well have been though. He pretty much lost almost every second of every round and the ref stopped it in the 10th I believe.
Yeah I was lucky enough to be in Biloxi for that one live. I'm so glad I saw that Roy performance instead of all the garbage that came before and after.
His problem is he cant "pull the trigger", before the calzaghe fight he was knocking guys out left and right but he was landing clean flush power shots to do so and had pretty good power in his right and left. It was really more his overhand right than his left hook that he was knocking the guys out with despite his name. Everyone seems to think its all mental but I suspect its more physical because no matter what opponent he cant seem to land cleanly like he used to and when he does there is no power or pop left, his punches are slow, easy to slip and dont bother anyone when they do land. I think the shoulder / rotator cuff injury he had in the fight with Typsko immediately after the calzaghe fight is what really ruined him, especially considering they were questioning if he would ever fight again: http://www.eastsideboxing.com/news.php?p=9130&more=1 and considering he performed well in that fight against a good opponent. People want to suggest its mental but does anyone really think he was having calzaghe flashbacks fighting with Peter ****ing manfredo? The lacy that stopped Reid and pemberton would have annihilated manfredo in the early rounds but he couldnt land with authority like he used to.
Agree , the injury is the main thing after Calzaghe beatdown. He couldn't throw punches like he used to with power behind them. Totally washed up at a young age. Thrown to the wolves, he must feel terrible really about how his career played out. "What Hook" Lacy goes down as a top hype job all time.
I think the rotator cuff was an issue but the mental side was as well. Thinking about it from a practical point of veiw, I can't imagine how I'd ever motivate myself to train hard for a fight again after getting hammered like that infront of everybody I knew against somebody I was supposed to beat. I think it should have been stopped in the seventh when Calzaghe got him in that corner, it would have been called premature, but certainly it shouldn't have gone 12. Lacy was never as good as Kessler but in all fairness he was considered as 1 or 2 by everybody going into that fight. I honestly think Lacy was better than Beyer at that stage.
He was having serious problems with that shoulder pre-Calzaghe as well, and just didn't get it taken care of in time. He lost a LOT of power after the surgery, and I think that's the main reason for his sudden decline.
A thread about Lacy's performances yet Calzaghe is mentioned 20 times in that post. You're a straight up dumbass. "Calzaghe at 36 still throwing 1000 punches a fight is more past prime than a 44 year old Hopkins", isn't that a thread you started?, idiot.
