Lamont Peterson: "A lot of things didn't make sense about Margarito . . ."

To be fair I always thought he looked heavy handed long before the wraps, the way he was built (huge for a welter) and the way he threw his punches it looked like he was throwing bombs and when I first saw the Cotto fight I wasn't shocked at the damage he caused at the time, but that's just me.

You don't need to have tremendous punching power to do damage when you're as persistent and determined as Margarito was at his peak.He has that confidence in the later rounds because he knows that his conditioning was about as good as it got and that when fighters were tired and there for the kill,he was still fresh and capable of exploiting their downfall.



And to those who point out Margarito's lack of success since the Mosley fight - you do realize fighters age,right? You do understand the type of fighter that Margarito is,how long he's been doing this,and what type of beating he suffered against Mosley,right.Doesn't take a ****ing rocket scientist to figure out why he doesnt look as effective as he once did.

I kinda’ understand Peterson’s logic there. Margarito’s punches don’t look as if they’re being thrown with that much speed and conviction. You know how you see some fighters that you know are putting some power behind their shots; like launching their body behind them (Naseem), turning at the hips and legs (Tyson), putting their shoulder behind it (Cotto), etc. With Margarito, you don't notice any of that.

Mind you, the likes of Pacquiao, Maidana and Pavlik, don't show you much, either.

So in Margarito’s defence, I don’t think it’s an accurate way of determining how powerful a boxer’s punch ought to be. In fact, with those long arms of his, he does manage to generate a fair bit of velocity with his shots. Not to mention, that he did manage to display that fierce accumulative power against Pacquiao - a fight that we definitely know he was not loaded in - and almost folded him like a piece of paper with that body shot; something which Cotto didn't come close to doing when he fought him [Pacquiao].

Damn the more I think about it the more it does seem to add up. I never hated on Margarito since I thought it was possible he didn't know and that it was a one-time thing and we can never truly know what happened....but I'm starting to believe it more and more as I think and re-watch the footage and notice, as Lamont said, that Cotto's face changed dramatically from one two rounds to the next from relatively little.

There are heavy-handed punchers that don't look too fast or explosive, but some of Margarito's are straight up arm-punches and the boxers do react really adversely through their expressions and body language. The way he describes the look on their face is very telling coming from a fighter whose seen plenty of hurt guys and dished out plenty of knockouts and hard punches.

Bute's a dfferent type of puncher...

Bute's accuracy, sense of timing and punch placement is infinitely better than Margo's. While he doesn't have the fastest hands, he generally appears to be putting more weight behind his punches than AM does. And, with all of that, Bute's still never inflicted the same type of facial damage against a fighter or had them in as much distress as Margo had Cotto in the first fight...Even though he has, in some cases, landed at the same clip that Margo did against Cotto.

I just don't see Bute loading the wraps. Sorry.

 

You know, I used to think that too, and it used to anger me. But when you think about it, has the loss really had that much of an effect on his legacy? His only legitimate loss is to Pacquiao, but would he have won that fight if Margarito I hadn't happened the way it did? I don't think he would have, and I'm saying that as a Cotto fan. He just gets hit too much to win against a volume puncher like Pacquaio. In many ways, what happened in the first Margarito fight inspired Miguel to change and improve. I'm sure you'll agree he's a better boxer now that he was in 08. The only thing I'd say is, if Margarito I hadn't happened, Cotto might have had one or two bigger fights, i.e., Mayweather etc. In my opinion Miguel loses to Mayweather and Pacquiao every time anyway though. To me his legacy wouldn't appear much different now if the first Margarito fight hadn't happened.

 

Mosley is a cheater that was on EPO Hormones/ Steroids when he fought Margarito.
