LaMotta v Hopkins

LaMotta, eked out wins over technical boxers with more dimension to their game in my opinion.

 

Such as who?

Holman Williams stands outas about the best, and it is definitely one of Lamottas best performances, but even then Hopkins is arguably every bit as good as him. I think La Motta would struggle with Hopkins class.

He would make it through to the end, of course, and would rally throughout, but at the end of the day, LaMotta was not consistently good enough to deal with Hopkins who would win a reasonably close, but still comfortable victory.

 

Hopkins would probably win a decision, but LaMotta is better suited to deal with Hopkins's tactics than any fighter that Hopkins has fought. He knew all the tricks, and had counter-measures for them, unlike the likes of Jean Pascal, Trinidad, Pavlik and others.

 

Hm, I think Hopkins balance and excellent switching from defense to offense and footwork will make the difference here. He was absolutly brilliant there. LaMotta wouldn´t find him for long parts in the find and Hopkins would punish him with counters when he comes close. I think LaMotta´s dedication, attitude and workrate may trouble Hopkins at times but overall I think Hopkins is just the better fighter.

Holman was 34 and in his 177th fight, still it was considered close if I rememered rightly. I'm sure is referring to Robinson but Robbi was a much smaller 144lber when Lamotta actually won. Marshall beat him though and didn't consider him as good as Murderer's Row fighters he fought

Hopkins imo would force Lamotta to fight his fight, outbox him outside, move away from the left hook, as Lamotta comes in with left hooks look to step off and throw right counters, hold on the inside, low blow and headbutt. Lamotta would push him and have his moments but it wouldn't be enough, even his legendary workrate against a Prime Hopkins would be near matched

 

Prime Hopkins fought every second of every round too. We are not talking about today´s ancient one here.

Give me Jake Lamotta anyday of the week in this matchup. Bernard never looked too impressive to me when he fought a real middleweight fighter.

I don't see anyway that he breaks Lamotta down the way he was able to do against smaller men that moved up to 160.

 

I dont think that Lamotta was at the elite level of middleweights. He was a good fighter, but nowhere near as good as most people seem to rate him today. The win over Ray was a good win, but does anyone here really not think that Hopkins in his prime wouldnt also do the same to a welterweight Ray Robinson. I think he does exactly the same as he did to Trinidad, or De La hoya, stops him. And i dont even think that Middleweight Ray would be as dominant over Hopkins as he was over Lamotta.

 

LaMotta would simply outwork him to a very fair decision.
