Was this decision considered controversial, what with LaMotta dropping Robinson?

I have heard that this fight was controversial. In Lamotta's autobiographical film, "Raging Bull", the consensus seems to be that Robinson was awarded the decision because "he was going into the army the next day".I'm not quite sure why this would be a deciding factor, but obviously all of the the first five fights between these two were close , hard fought and open to different interpertations.

That was Jake's comment about the Army. By all accounts it was very close.

Poor Jake. Waddles in with a 16-pound weight advantage, can’t even be arsed to make the middleweight limit while fighting a welter (Jake did this often) and wins three rounds on the ref’s cards and two from each judge — ‘he wuz ROBBED!’

The boos about the decision were from LaMotta supporters from this account: Something often overlooked in ‘see that was a bad decision’ posts, as if everyone in the stands is a neutral observer only interested in justice. Do people even watch sports? The hometown crowd at a football game always boos a call of holding — does that mean the call was bad, or that they just didn’t want their team penalized?

This account paints a clear picture of Ray winning fairly handily. There’s no beef here.

LaMotta,I do love his style and he's very courageous inside the ring, but he definitely was a jerk.

It’s like Norm MacDonald on Hitler: The more. I learn about this guy, the more I don’t care for him.
