Will this bout be determined by Jake's toughness, or in spite of it?

Bob Satterfield ? he was KOd by LaMotta in the year Valdez was born.
But I guess it is a good enough reason for janitor , SuzieQ and binschtock to believe LaMotta or even Satterfield woould have beaten Valdez. Well , Satterfield just might have been able to either slap the newborn unconscious or even beat the grown man out of sheer size advantage.

Valdez wins a decision over Jake..and he had the power to actually earn LaMotta's respect. Valdez is another, like Benvenuti, who gets lowrated unduly here.

    Really ?
Interesting, it would be an upset Red......big upset !
I like Valdez too....But I think Jake would beat him by close UD....

I think that Valdez looked great vs briscoe in '74 Vic...I think that if he used this same boxing/punching style vs Jake it would have been very interesting.

Actually, you could be right about that, but it would definitely be an interesting fight.

I dont see Valdez having the power to worry LaMotta. I think LaMotta could work him and keep applying pressure and grind out a UD.

That pick is unusual for me as i would normally choose the boxer over the pressure fighter.

Lamotta has a good style for the classic boxers who use movement. His pressuring ability, jab, movement and strength force a boxer to move and he can wear them out in the later rounds. Now Valdez wasn't a classic boxer, well he was from the waist up, his feet are pretty much always set and his punching power allows him to get away with this.

So Lamotta's pressuring style is not going to be at its best, and Valdez's style, as he illustrated against Lamotta should be a good foil for Lamotta, as he can punch hard enough to get Lamotta's respect.

However, I feel Lamotta's strength will play a big part in this, that and his defence. He is much more subtle than Briscoe in the way he advances so he should be able to minimise the damage it takes to get inside Valdez and once in there Lamotta should have the strength to push Valdez back, minimising his power and not allowing him to get set to throw.

I think that factor should allow Lamotta to escape with a close decision.

 Which "Valdez" are we talking about here?

No one here seems to agree whether it's Rodrigo or Nino.

Rodrigo tends to get underrated, He turned pro at age 16 in 1962 so he was just as much over the hill (as Monzon) when they first fought in 76. No one knocked Valdez out and Jake decisioned many fighters. IMO Rodrigo simply outworks Jake in route to a UD.
Another South American fighter that wasn't given a world shot until the 70's.
Not better than Monzon but a 73-74 scrap would have been much more competitive IMO.
He reminds me of Gregory in a way, a fighter that would raise hell against any champ in ANY era...
