I wouldn't call Alvarez supremely athletic but he's solid in that department. He's a bit too stiff for my taste but he's young. What he does have is good fundamentals and boxing intelligence. His power seems solid but nothing great. This is the first time I've seen him and he looked good. Cotto was more game than I thought he'd be and was a good test for Alvarez. It would have been nice if he would have stopped the smaller guy but still a good performance. As a prospect I think he fits in perfectly with guys like Mike Jones and Antwoine Smith.

I think the kid is really talented. Looks a more fluid version of Cotto to me.

Considering that Jose Cotto is not a true Welter Weight and is not that good, the fact that he almost knocked out Canelo, should give GBP something long and hard to think about.

Had they really put Canelo in against PBF, that would have been career suicide.

I think Berto takes Canelo to school and I don't think too much about Berto, he is ok but he is better than Canelo me thinks.

Look for Canelo to be brought up very slowly now. Believe that.

The thing is, I'm not sure Alvarez is built ideally. He's a 19 year old welterweight. That almost certainly means his true career destiny will be at 154 or even 160. At 5'8", that makes him pretty short for those divisions, which will put him at a permanent disadvantage going forward, and he doesn't have Pacquiao-like speed to allow him to use his smaller size to outmaneuver his opponents.

I'm curious to see how he develops, but I wouldn't hold out hopes that we're seeing the Chosen One or anything.

Yeah, definitely worth keeping an eye on but I wouldn't have him replacing Barerra, Morales, or JMM yet. He has strengths and somethings he needs to work on. On one hand he looked good in beating up Cotto. But on the other hand Cotto's was simply a solid lightweight several years ago. Alvarez is a big welter and couldn't put Cotto away and was hurt himself.

Maybe you're not even conscious of how race-obsessed you are? :think

We get it; he's Mexican but looks white. Very confusing. It's hard out here for a hater.

The fact is, athleticism encompasses many different physical attributes and can be evidenced by different things. Specifically in the context of the sport of boxing, perhaps most famously Roy Jones Junior was called athletic because of his speed and reflexes. Does that mean anybody who doesn't look like Roy, or who doesn't rely on speed and reflexes, isn't athletic? No.

Like I said, it's come to encompass a lot of different attributes through common usage over the years, but if you go by the actual dictionary definition it has nothing to do with speed, flexibility, or reflexes specifically.

    Physically strong and well-developed; muscular.

Having a sturdy build or well-proportioned body structure.

Of or pertaining to athletes; involving the use of physical skills or capabilities, as strength, agility, or stamina

In the dictionary sense, Alvarez is a very athletic welterweight. :deal

His athletic abilities are very impressive for a teenager, I think all praise was based on Alvarez very young age. Imagine how good could he become for his early 20s, but there's no guarantee of anything, that's why it's called potential.
