Prime Sam [whenever you think that was ], versus Floyd's title challengers? Harris Rademacher Johannson McNeely Liston Jackson London Same rules etc, as Floyd's day. How does Sam do ?
Would he though, Moore had allot of good performances, very good defence and very good at setting traps and countering with KO power. He's the out and out better technician by a long way
That was Moore's worst performance of his career vs Patterson. Patterson deserves a lot of credit for the way he beat Archie, but whether it was because Marciano ruined him in 1955, or because the blackmailing issue with an ex was bothering him, Archie was off that night. Archie used zero upperbody movement against Patterson, didn't dip roll, bend in the crouch or anything.
all these would follow a pattern....Sam would stalk them for fun....Sam would have bit of fun....and then Sam would put them out - only one who compares is Moore - but that version from the night he fought Patterson was not Moore - Moore wasn't even there that night - don't think Marciano ruined Moore either - Moore fought another of the fights of his life 2 years after Patterson against Yvon Durrelle - there was something else badly wrong with Moore that night and he'd be a sitting duck for Sam fighting like that
Of course, we always assume a man is at his best, and in that case we'll be pitting a 173lbs long-limbed, spleen-rupturing adamant terror against a band of fair-to-decent men. Save for a Jack Johnson, Langford was what we fantastically term as 'unbeatable' during his prime years. Moore at his best would really be up against it...fifteen long rounds with the 'Boston Terror'...and there were aspects of Johansson’s game that left a lot to be desired. In a fight with Langford there would be be too much on offer.
Moore fought fairly well in that fight, made Floyd miss a plenty and tried to set him up for counters. Patterson was just a machine, like Tyson in his title-winning performance. He was not going to be denied. We also can't forget that Moore never had the best chin. If he got caught like that by Langford he'd go out, but Langford didn't have Patterson's speed. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCUkqyfUjTU[/ame] The out of the ring stuff was surely bothering Moore but he was a professional in every sense of the word. He put up a fair effort against a much younger man, but not a championship effort.
Thanks to all for the input. Last time I looked Moore and Patterson fought for the vacant title:huh .I asked everyone for Floyd's challengers.
Or it could just be Patterson's speed was all wrong for the older Archie, Langford isn't quite as quick
