Here is an account of the fight, interestingly the reason given for Langford not stopping Jeannette was the weight disparity given as ; Langford 170lbs Jeannette 190lbs. Langford states he is hot on champion Johnson's trail trying to force a title shot. Unfortunately the projected purse from the NSC in London was derisory ,[they were pretty frugal with their purses] ,and the fight never materialized . Johnson was never going to risk his title against Langford for anything less than top dollar and as he had pulled down an absolutely huge purse that summer against Jeffries no doubt a dangerous Langford defence for a comparatively meagre reward looked less than appealing . http://news.google.com/newspapers?i...AAIBAJ&pg=4819,5207362&dq=joe+jeannette&hl=en
Jennette was an awful tough guy to stop. If I remember correctly, he was only stopped twice in over 100 contests, once in one of his earliest fights and another time when he was knocked out in one of his fights with Langford.
I think a large part of this might have to do with Jeanette's style. He wasnt afraid to get on his bicycle or put on his track shoes and absolutely run his ass off when he got in trouble. You can see this his 1913 bout with Langford when a combination of luck (the KDs coming late in the round) and his willingness to run saved him from a KO. You can see in that fight that Langford definately had the power to blast Jeanette out of there if he got ahold of him but its hard for a smaller guy to land a finisher on a bigger guy when the bigger guy is backpeddaling like theres no tomorrow.
I think Langford had the sort of freakish power that meant he could blast out anyone he caught solidly. If he tagged you the smart thing to do was get the f**k out of there.
True, and for the record, I just rewatched Langford-Jeanette 1913 and when Jeanette got caught in the final round he tried to fight not run, as I had previously thought (although he looked so punch drunk Im not sure he knew what he was doing LOL).
