I think Langford was a lot more aggressive than Toney, who often waited to counter.Plus, Sam had heavy duty power, Toney was not really more than average in this department imo. Toney used a lot of shoulder rolls to avoid shots, and would lay on the ropes, probably because he was not in shape to move much, his fight against Jirov showed his ring smarts, imo,but Langford was the complete package.
there are some similarities but langford imo is much better and a much bigger puncher I am so glad some good footage of sam has appeared after such a long time
Cox's decision to use "Boston Terror" instead of "Boston Tar Baby" is appreciated. "Tar baby" was a venomous racial slur that was thrown around in the press and everywhere else during that era. The fact that boxing aficionados and pundits still, to this very day, refer to Langford by that name is regrettable. Langford and his people deserve more respect.
Langford's power aside, i wasn't overly impressed with the recent footage, moreso toward Jeannete mind you, who barely threw more than a handful of quality accurate punches.Might be one i need to watch a few times to really let sink in though.
Langford and Toney - two of my favourite fighters to watch - some people hate Toney and find him annoying but I think he's a great fighter to watch in there - could watch and re-watch (and have) his fights at heavyweight against the likes of Ruiz, Holy, Rahman etc - genuinely would've loved to have seen him go up against the Klits - I think he would've given them decent fights - certainly better than most have by a mile Sam Langford in my eyes is simply superlative, a prodigy, a phenom, a little bomb - and undoubtably one of the top 10 pound for pound in history
Very well done video thanks for sharing. I wish there was more footage of Langford but now you've got me in the mood to watch some more of Toney. I love the sweet science. Hopefully someone makes a vid like this for Henry Armstrong I would love to see that.
The problem with a lot of these fighters is that we only have a partial portfolio of their work. How many Joe Louis fights would you have to watch to grasp his full repatoir of skills?
"Langford and his people deserve more respect." I almost went with the name Tar Baby in the title of my biography about him, but ultimately decided against it when I discovered that there were others like yourself who would be offended by doing so. The last thing I wanted to do was use a title that would prevent anyone who might otherwise be inclined to consider purchasing the book to learn more about him from doing so. That said, I did speak with his great grand-daughter about this issue at the time and as far as she was concerned it would have been perfectly fine with her.
That is a joke. Oppponents were awful, and 'Bruce Lee type block" or whatever. Plus he is just doing stuff anyonme else good can do.
