Langford - Jeannette - Full Clip-Real Speed

Gotta say I am not terribly impressed with Jeanette, comes in off balance, winging hooks, chin in the air... I have to assume, despite the time correction here, that he was quick in order to get some of those in. He's game as hell but he clearly is learning on the job.

 

Jeannette seems to get by with his athleticism and gameness. Actually he reminds me more of a modern boxer than an "old timer". It should be noted though that he seems almost scared of Langford's power and is not really willing to mix it too much. Perhaps against an inferior opponent he would look very good, unfortunately we don't have the option of seeing him except in this one fight.

 

Hm, I think Jeanette´s winging in off-balance serves a purpuse here. Everytime he does so they end up in a clinch and he avoides beeing counterpunched because Langford is busy holding the weight of Jeanette.

Langford looks absolutly awesome though.

 

Yeah, because he basically is throwing his whole weight at Langford who has to hold it instead of counterpunching him.

 

Great film. It's always a rare treat to see the legends in action instead of just reading about them. It also gives us a perspective on the styles of the old time fighters compared to thier latter day counterparts. Boxing was noticeably different 100 yrs ago. NOT VASTLY DIFFERENT but different nonetheless. Stances, methods of delivery, footwok etc. though certainly similar were still not quite the same as they are nowadays. I'm not qualified enough to say they were better or worse but I couldn't help but notice that the taller man Jeannette kept leaning over and not using his height to his advantage. I also noticed that if he had developed a snapping jab from the shoulder instead of the "thrust/jab" he threw he might have done a better job of keeping Langford at bay. Just random thoughts but it was great to watch this film especially with the time correction.

 

I agree. His style is a bit jarring on first watch. And certainly not as awe inspiring as Langford. But he is effective at what he does.

 

Jeannette however was not necessarily a tall fighter, standing at 5'10, it's just that Langford was extremely short for a heavyweight. It's basically an average-sized or slightly small heavyweight (for the day) fighting a very small heavyweight who possessed devastating power, so Jeannette had to make adjustments from his usual style.

I don't think Jeannette was ever recognized as among the greatest technicians, he took up boxing very late and got by with natural talent, gameness and craftiness, not necessarily well-honed textbook boxing skill. Not that he couldn't box, it's just that we shouldn't expect him to be the most well-rounded technician out there considering his late start. What he did was effective nonetheless, and he gave the great Langford plenty to think about here and took trendemous punishment.

 

The guy looks like some imperterbable monster here,clever Joe seems at a loss as to which tactics to adopt.
Having Sam Langford, looking for you ,would be a frightening thought.

This has nothing to do with him beeing an old-timer though. There aren´t that many fighters around today who can use their height properly, look at Paul Williams.

btw. I think his jab is one of the best things about Jeanette on that film.
