just watching it now and gotta say its better than the main event which i saw live the other day. Brewer has good skills but Lara just looks like its gonna be hard for almost anyone to outbox him. I'd like to see how he reacts to a skilled fighter who brings the heat.
Premature stoppage for sure. However, Lara did a good job over all. He played it safe, was very patient, and cautious. That was the right approach. Five other undefeated propsects thought they could just run right over Grady Brewer, and either got knocked out, or badly humiliated. Some have critisized Lara for being somewhat careful with Brewer, but I can only assume thay don't know much about Grady or his history of derailng young hopefuls. I was somewhat impressed by Lara's physical strength as well. Brewer is VERY strong, but he could not bully Lara much. I'm not yet totally sold on the guy, but he shows real potential.
Lara has a lot of room to improve and it seems like he's talented enough to make those improvements if he's willing to grow...im excited to see how hes brought along. i guess i'm in the same boat as boo - impressed, but not overly impressed.
I'd like to see Lara fight David Lopez next. Lopez fought his last fight at 154, and looked pretty good. I'm not at all sure that David would take a fight with a 10 fight prospect, but I would like to see how Lara handled a fairly quick and slick 6' 2" southpaw. Brewer to Lopez just seems like a pretty natural progression, and would put Lara against a different style.
I like it. I don't think it'd be a smart idea to pin him against somebody like Cintron just yet, like some were suggesting. Thats too much of a step up right now.
Believe it or not, Bronco McKart does not plan to retire. He has a fight coming up on February 27th. If he wins, a Lara/McKart match-up is another fight that would be very good for Lara's development.
Cintron? :rofl Bro, Lara is way stronger, more calmed, more polished, more skilled, a southpaw, World Amateur Champ, 300 plus amateur fights, great punching power and combos. Cintron will get " a Cuban boxing lesson " if they ever fight. No disrespect to Cintron but Lara is too much for him... :good
Booradley, why do you keep insisting that it was a premature stoppage? Brewer got nailed with a hard uppercut that sent him to the canvas, he got up and was not really dazed but Lara kept attacking him at will, Brewer was not throwing anything back, had a nasty cut in his left eye and was going to get " a nasty KO " if the ref did'nt get in the way. The stoppage was very fair, remember their is no need for fighters to take " unnecesary " punishment as that can be hazardeous to their health. Even Brewer was not complaining about the stoppage so stop saying that! Brewer had no chance against Lara! :bart And someone here who knows Lara's wife said that she told him that Lara did'nt train enough to fight Brewer as his Cuban trainer Ismael Salas was very busy working with Gamboa for months and he coud'nt really give Lara a good training workout... If that's true, then Lara really is something else because even like that he still battered Brewer, and stopped him! :bart
Amatuer boxing provides fighters with a good foundation from which to learn how to fight like professionals. It does not automatically turn them into great professionals. Anthony Hanshaw and Jermain Taylor both beat Kelly Pavlik in the ams. As a pro Hanshaw turned out to be nothing more than a gatekeeper/fringe contender. As a pro Pavlik beat Taylor twice. Many such examples can be found in boxing history. Right now Lara needs to fight guys like David Lopez, Bronco McKart, Ossie Duran, Harry Joe Yorgey, et. Someone on the level of Cintron/Angulo would assassinate him.
I feel Cintron is too tough of a fight for Lara right now. Sure Lara has been looking great right now, but Kermit can Punch and has decent boxing skills. I understand about the all Amateur fights Lara has but the pros is different, many great Amateurs don't make it in the pro.
