In all honesty, Spence needs more experience, but Spence might be the only person that can unquestionably beat Lara. Lara has perfected his ability to fight convention fighters out of the southpaw stance. He understands what his opposition is generally trying to do, and he has developed a style predicated on his ability to judge and keep distance. However, if he fights a Southpaw like Spence, he may be forced out of his comfort zone and be forced to fight because he will find that Spence is landing punches that he did not feel he was capable of landing. Considering Spence is relentless in his attack, as well as skilled in his own right, he may have a high probability of winning this fight. Spence should fight someone decent at 154 and then step up to fight Lara, unless they are willing to negotiate something else.
You made some good points, but it wouldn't be the fight I would pursue if I were both participants. It might not sell a lot.
Spence is nowhere near ready for Lara. Lara has too much experience. You may as well say that Spence is ready to face Canelo. No way! Spence should stick to the game plan and fight the easier opponent, Brook or Khan.
I disagree. I'm impressed with Spence. He's very calm under pressure and punches incredibly hard. He's also very good at keeping distance regardless at how his opponent approaches him. He's young and he has killer instinct, so he occasionally gets hit with shots he shouldn't when he's closing the show, but Spence is a potential superstar whose power is still a mystery, but it may prove to be lethal at the top level. I think Kel Brook took a tremendous amount of punishment vs GGG and I don't think it would be in his best interest to fight Spence because he needs more time to recover in my opinion. Khan is out of the question because Spence would steam roll him. A better fight would be with Spence or one of the Charlo brothers. After that, he might stop Lara.
I'm impressed with the way Spence fights Southpaws. He's still relentless and he's really quick on his feet. Lara has a laid back style, mainly predicated on his mastery of the uncomfortable distance between southpaws and conventional fighters. I think the pace set by Spence will make Lara have to be more active and fight outside his comfort zone. Remember, I also predicted that Angulo would beat Lara precisely because of his activity and relentlessness. It was the volume puncher vs the boxer, and while I was not accurate with my prediction, Angulo was giving Lara a hell of an ass whippin in a very competitive fight. Spence is much better defensively than Angulo, plus he's a pure southpaw which will not allow Lara to exploit the angles he can get away with against other fighters in a big part to his massive reach and full extension type style that keeps his opponents just out of range. I think you might be underestimating this fight.
I like Spence too and feel he has a great career ahead of him. That's why I wouldn't want to see him muck it up by facing Lara. Spence or the Charlos have yet to face an opponent at Lara's level. If he chooses to take 1 or 2 fights before Brook he should maybe look at Andrade. I would favor Andrade, but he has been pretty inactive and that may make the difference in a fight with Spence.
Or Spence could just fight Garcia, but I doubt Garcia would be too excited about the prospect of seeing Spence in the same ring with him.
