Who do you guys have higher on your all time heavyweight lists? For me, the Top 2 is basically 1A/1B with Muhammad Ali and Joe Louis respectively. Below them is a coin toss between Larry Holmes and Lennox Lewis. For the last couple of years, I had Larry Holmes at the third spot, with Lennox being the 4th best heavyweight of all time. But due to some discussions on this very group, I began to appreciate Lewis even more than I did. It's still a coin toss for me, but I think I will have Lennox as my number 3. What about you guys?
C'mon man, give them at least a chance. At least you didn't comapred them to the heavyweight king Manuel Charr.
I will say Larry Holmes. Great jab and footwork. Champion during 7 years. He had an amazing longevity and gave Mercer a boxing lesson while on his 40's. He held more than his own against Holyfield and McCall who had just beaten Lewis. Had numerous fights where he came back after being on the verge of losing. Fabulous recuperative abilities. Lost only once by KO to arguably the most explosive puncher ever.
I rate Lewis extremely highly at 3, after Ali and Louis. The rankings do fluctuate slightly, but I usually have Holmes around 6. Excellent champion. I also rate big George very highly, probably around number 5 - he's gone up significantly as I've gotten older and realised how hard it must be to become a world champion past 40 (Holmes did perform at a high level into his older years but didn't achieve quite as much). Holmes is ahead of the likes of Frazier and Tyson, in my top 10, fyi. I don't have Klitschko in there. All subjective of course, but I have both Lewis and Holmes very high ... But Lewis a touch ahead due to his quality resume.
It was. I have a hard time separating them. Both are over-rated, & a fight between them would be as close as it would be excruciating.
Lewis; fought in a better era, beat better opposition, was more dominant in his wins, and I'd rank him higher H2H as well. The only knock against Lewis was his two losses which I find strange considering Holmes lost more and never avenged his losses but whatever.
I fundamentally agree w/ this. Lewis was more erratic during their respective primes, but he had bigger wins & reached bigger heights IMO, + I would favor him H2H as well.
His abysmal under-performances against washed up Holyfield (second fight), Mercer, & Klitschko, his laziness with the jab, & his relative frailty of chin.
